Introduction
The MCP16503 from Microchip Technology is an integrated power-management IC for general-purpose embedded MPU designs that require dynamic voltage scaling (DVS). It consolidates four synchronous buck-regulator channels and two auxiliary LDOs in a compact 32-pin, 5 mm × 5 mm VQFN package, helping reduce the number of separate power devices needed around an MPU.
Its combination of programmable power rails, integrated sequencing, diagnostic access, and low-power operating modes is aimed at systems with multiple processor, memory, and peripheral supply domains. An AEC-Q100-qualified variant is also available.
What it does
The MCP16503 accepts a 2.7 V to 5.5 V input and provides six regulated output channels:
- Four DC-DC buck regulators, each rated for up to 1 A output current
- Two auxiliary LDOs, each rated for up to 300 mA output current
The buck converters operate at a 2 MHz switching frequency and support up to 100% duty cycle. Buck 2, Buck 3, and Buck 4 are specified with ±1% voltage accuracy for DDR, core, and CPU outputs respectively, making the device suited to power trees where rail regulation is important for processor and memory operation.
A 1 MHz I²C interface provides programming and diagnostic access. The PMIC also includes built-in power-channel sequencing, protection functions, startup support for pre-biased outputs, low-power mode, and hibernate capability. Its PWM switching-frequency displacement of ±16.5% can help distribute switching activity across a range rather than concentrating it at one frequency.
For reduced-power states, the specified typical quiescent current is less than 300 µA with the buck converters and LDO1 enabled and no load. Maximum shutdown current is specified as 10 µA at a 4.5 V input and +105 °C junction temperature.
Applications
Potential applications based on the device’s integrated MPU-oriented power architecture include:
- General-purpose embedded MPU boards
- Embedded systems using separate CPU, core, DDR, and peripheral voltage rails
- Compact computing or control modules requiring dynamic voltage scaling
- Power subsystems that need programmable rail sequencing and diagnostics
- Designs requiring low-power or hibernate operating modes
Design considerations
The MCP16503 is supplied in a 32-pin 5 mm × 5 mm VQFN package, so PCB layout should account for a fine-pitch QFN footprint and the thermal needs of multiple integrated switching regulators. Its specified junction-temperature range is −40 °C to +125 °C.
Designers should plan for the 2.7 V to 5.5 V input range, the required external components for six output channels, and I²C connectivity where configuration or diagnostics are needed. The 1 MHz I²C interface and integrated sequencing can simplify power-control integration, while the individual output-current limits should be checked against the expected loads on processor, memory, and auxiliary rails.
