Introduction
Texas Instruments’ TCAN6062 is a family of high-speed CAN XL transceivers for multidrop networks. Designed to meet the CAN XL physical-layer requirements of ISO 11898-2:2024 Annex A, the devices support both high-rate FAST signaling and SIC operation, combining CAN-bus connectivity with logic-level translation, low-power operation, and bus protection features.
What it does
The TCAN6062 provides the physical-layer interface between a controller and a CAN XL bus. It supports SIC, FAST TX, and FAST RX operating modes, with signaling rates up to 20Mbps in FAST mode and up to 8Mbps in SIC mode.
A VIO supply enables logic-level translation across a 1.71V to 5.5V range, allowing the transceiver’s digital interface to match a range of controller I/O levels. The TXD input supports PWM decoding, while the device also provides low-power standby operation and remote wake-up through the CAN bus using the ISO 11898-2:2024 Annex A wake-up pattern.
For operation on a shared bus, the receiver supports a common-mode input voltage of ±12V. Protection provisions include ±58V bus-fault protection, IEC ESD protection on the bus pins, undervoltage protection on VCC and VIO, TXD dominant timeout, and thermal shutdown. When unpowered, the bus and logic terminals are high impedance, supporting hot-plug operation with glitch-free behavior on the bus and RXD output.
Applications
- CAN XL multidrop networks requiring FAST-mode signaling up to 20Mbps
- Networks using SIC-mode signaling up to 8Mbps
- Embedded systems with controller I/O levels from 1.71V to 5.5V
- CAN bus nodes that require standby operation and remote wake-up
- Designs where bus-fault tolerance, ESD protection, and hot-plug behavior are important integration considerations
Design considerations
The TCAN6062 is offered in SOIC-8 and compact 3mm × 3mm VSON-8 packages, with the VSON option featuring wettable flanks. Designers should select the package according to board-area, inspection, and assembly requirements.
System integration should account for the separate VIO logic supply range of 1.71V to 5.5V, as well as the selected operating mode: SIC, FAST TX, FAST RX, or low-power standby. The specified ±12V receiver common-mode range and ±58V bus-fault protection are relevant when evaluating bus-side electrical conditions. Remote wake-up support and high-impedance unpowered terminals may also simplify designs that need wake-capable nodes or hot-plug behavior.
