Introduction

Littelfuse’s TP7.0SMD-XC series is an automotive-qualified, surface-mount transient-voltage-suppression (TVS) diode family for protecting electronics exposed to high-energy voltage transients. The series combines a 7000 W peak pulse power rating with a low-profile surface-mount construction, targeting protection duties where automotive electrical environments, including load-dump events, must be considered.

Built around a glass-passivated chip junction, TP7.0SMD-XC devices are AEC-Q101 qualified and specified for operation from -65 °C to +175 °C.

What it does

A TVS diode is connected to a circuit needing protection and is intended to limit transient overvoltage events before they can reach sensitive downstream electronics. The TP7.0SMD-XC series is described for transients induced by lightning and other electrical events, with applications including automotive I/O interfaces, VCC buses, battery protection, load-dump protection, and compliance testing.

The series has a 24 V reverse stand-off voltage and a response time from 0 V of no more than 1.0 ps. Its stated transient-protection characteristics include IEC 61000-4-2 ESD protection at 30 kV for both air and contact discharge, along with IEC 61000-4-4 EFT protection.

Applications

  • Automotive I/O interface protection
  • Protection of 24 V VCC or supply buses
  • Vehicle battery-line transient protection
  • Load-dump protection circuits
  • Designs undergoing ESD or EFT compliance evaluation
  • Protection of sensitive electronic equipment exposed to lightning-induced or other transient events

Design considerations

The TP7.0SMD-XC is a surface-mount series with a low-profile design and built-in strain relief, which may be relevant where board height and mechanical robustness are important. Its 7000 W peak pulse power dissipation rating is distinct from its 6.5 W power dissipation specification on an infinite heat sink; both transient conditions and thermal implementation should therefore be considered in the protection design.

The 24 V reverse stand-off voltage should be matched to the normal operating voltage of the protected line so that the diode remains appropriate for the intended bus or interface. Designers should also account for the specified -65 °C to +175 °C operating range and the device’s MSL 1 classification per J-STD-020 during assembly planning. The series is halogen free and RoHS compliant.
