Introduction
The Diodes Incorporated AL58263A is a 16-channel constant-current sink LED driver intended for automotive lighting designs requiring individually controlled LED channels, fine dimming resolution, and fault monitoring. Its use of Adaptive Pulse Density Modulation (APDM) with 16-bit grayscale control makes it suited to lighting assemblies where smooth, accurate brightness adjustment is important.
What it does
The AL58263A regulates LED current across 16 output channels, with each channel programmable from 2 mA to 45 mA when powered from a 5.0 V supply. Output channels support LED voltages up to 15 V.
For brightness control, the device provides 16-bit grayscale resolution and APDM dimming. A 4-wire serial interface with grayscale clock support—LAT, DI, DO, DCK, and GCK—allows a controller to load lighting data and synchronize dimming operation. DCK operation is specified to 25 MHz, while GCK supports frequencies up to 16 MHz.
Two independent 4-bit global current controls provide separate gain adjustment for Group A and Group B channels. This enables grouped current calibration or brightness setting without changing every channel’s grayscale data.
Integrated diagnostics include LED open- and short-circuit detection. Short-detection thresholds are selectable at 2 V, 3 V, 4 V, or 4.5 V, supporting adaptation to the voltage characteristics of the LED arrangement.
Applications
- Automotive exterior or interior LED lighting modules
- RGB lighting assemblies with independently controlled channels
- Multi-segment indicators and status-lighting panels
- LED backlighting or illuminated control interfaces requiring high-resolution dimming
- Lighting systems that benefit from open- and short-LED diagnostics
Design considerations
The AL58263A operates from a 3.0 V to 5.0 V input supply, while its LED output channels can support up to 15 V. Designers should account for both the controller supply domain and the LED-string voltage requirements when defining the power architecture.
The serial control connection requires LAT, DI, DO, and DCK signals, plus GCK for grayscale operation. Clock-frequency limits and timing integration should be considered when connecting the driver to the host controller or when daisy-chaining devices through the serial interface.
Current programming covers 2 mA to 45 mA per channel, and the two 4-bit global current controls divide channels into Group A and Group B. The specified typical channel-to-channel current accuracy is ±1.5%, with typical chip-to-chip accuracy of ±3%.
The device is supplied in a wettable-flank W-QFN4040-24/SWP (Type A1) package and is specified for ambient operation from -40°C to +105°C. Its LED diagnostic thresholds should be selected to match the intended LED and interconnect voltage conditions.
