AEC-Q102-qualified infrared LED family with double-stack emitters, high-current pulse operation, and 859 nm typical peak wavelength.
Introduction
ams OSRAM’s OSLON Black SFH 471x CS family comprises AEC-Q102-qualified infrared LEDs for industrial and automotive sensing. The devices use double-stack emitters and are designed for high-current pulse operation, with a typical peak wavelength of 859 nm. Three variants provide different optical beam widths, allowing a design to trade field of view against radiant intensity.
What it does
The SFH 4715CS, SFH 4716CS, and SFH 4717CS are infrared emitters in the OSLON Black family. Their clear silicone lens packages produce variant-specific typical half angles:
- SFH 4717CS: 25° half angle, with typical radiant intensity of 7850 mW/sr at 5 A pulsed drive
- SFH 4715CS: 40° half angle, with typical radiant intensity of 4550 mW/sr at 5 A pulsed drive
- SFH 4716CS: 75° half angle, with typical radiant intensity of 1700 mW/sr at 5 A pulsed drive
Despite their differing beam distributions, the variants have similar typical total radiant flux values, from 8270 mW to 8400 mW, under the stated 5 A, 100 µs pulse conditions. This makes the family suited to systems where optical coverage and directional intensity must be selected for the sensing geometry.
The LEDs have a typical centroid wavelength of 850 nm and a typical peak wavelength of 859 nm. Typical switching performance is specified as 15 ns rise time and 20 ns fall time at 5 A with a 2 Ω load.
Applications
Potential uses that follow from the devices’ infrared output, pulsed operation, and beam-angle options include:
- Industrial optical sensing systems
- Automotive sensing and detection hardware
- Machine-vision illumination
- Pulsed infrared measurement systems
- Narrow-, medium-, or wide-field IR illumination arrangements
Design considerations
Variant selection is an important optical design decision. The 25° SFH 4717CS concentrates output into the narrowest stated beam, while the 75° SFH 4716CS provides the broadest coverage; the SFH 4715CS occupies the intermediate 40° option.
Electrical drive conditions should account for the specified pulsed measurements: the listed optical-output and switching values are measured at 5 A with a 100 µs pulse width, while forward voltage is specified as 3.55 V typical and 4.40 V maximum under those conditions. The family’s typical thermal resistance is 4.5 K/W, making thermal integration relevant in high-current pulsed designs.
For robustness, the devices are AEC-Q102 qualified, have corrosion robustness class 3B, and specify 2 kV HBM ESD performance according to ANSI/ESDA/JEDEC JS-001, Class 2. The clear silicone lens package should also be considered as part of the system’s optical and mechanical integration.
