Introduction
STMicroelectronics’ TVS221SC-1T2 is a unidirectional, single-line self-controlled TVS diode for protecting 22 V power rails and low-speed I/O lines from ESD and small surge events. The device combines a 16 A, 8/20 µs peak-pulse-current rating with a compact SOD882 (0402) surface-mount package, targeting designs where transient protection must occupy minimal board area.
Its self-controlled TVS architecture is specified to provide flat clamping voltage across temperature and current ranges while maintaining low on-resistance.
What it does
The TVS221SC-1T2 is intended to shunt transient energy away from a protected line. It has a 22 V stand-off voltage and a 25 V to 27 V breakdown-voltage range at 1 mA. During an 8/20 µs surge at 16 A, reverse clamping voltage is specified at 27.4 V maximum, with peak pulse power rated to 440 W.
For ESD protection, the device is rated for IEC 61000-4-2 level 4 contact discharges up to ±8 kV and air discharges up to ±30 kV. It also carries an HBM rating of ±2 kV under JESD22-A114D level 2.
Low leakage is a notable characteristic for a 22 V protection device: leakage at the 22 V stand-off voltage is specified as 25 nA typical and 200 nA maximum. Typical line capacitance is 75 pF at 22 V and 1 MHz.
Applications
- Protection of 22 V power rails against ESD and small surge transients
- Low-speed external I/O lines requiring single-line transient suppression
- Space-constrained electronics using 0402-class surface-mount components
- Equipment operating in environments where IEC 61000-4-2 ESD robustness is relevant
Design considerations
The TVS221SC-1T2 is a unidirectional device, so circuit polarity and the expected transient direction should be considered during protection-network design. Its 22 V stand-off voltage, specified breakdown range, and 27.4 V maximum reverse clamping voltage at 16 A should be checked against both normal line voltage and the maximum voltage tolerated by the protected circuitry.
At 75 pF typical line capacitance, the part is suited to the stated power-line and low-speed-I/O role; designers should evaluate that capacitance in signal paths where edge rate or loading is important. The SOD882 (0402) SMD/SMT package supports dense layouts, while also requiring appropriate footprint, assembly, and soldering-process control. The specified maximum lead temperature for 10 seconds is 260°C.
The operating junction temperature range is −40°C to +125°C.
