Introduction
The Texas Instruments TPS1HC03-Q1 is a single-channel smart high-side switch for 12 V automotive battery systems. It combines an integrated NMOS power FET and charge pump with protection, sensing, and diagnostic functions in a compact 11-pin VQFN-HR package. Its low typical on-resistance, high adjustable current-limit range, and AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualification make it suited to protected automotive power-distribution channels operating across a –40°C to 125°C ambient range.
What it does
The TPS1HC03-Q1 switches power on the high side of a load, allowing a controller to connect and disconnect a supply path while monitoring operating conditions. The device supports an operating-voltage range of 3 V to 28 V, covering 12 V automotive battery-system use cases.
An integrated NMOS power FET provides a typical on-resistance of 3.2 mΩ, with a specified maximum of 5.7 mΩ at 150°C. The switch can support up to 19 A DC output load current, while its current limit is externally adjustable from 20 A to 57 A.
Built-in protection and visibility features include current limiting, current sensing, thermal shutdown, output clamp functionality, and diagnostics. Current-sense accuracy is specified at less than ±7% for currents of at least 5 A. For low-power vehicle states, the device specifies sleep current below 1.4 µA at 85°C.
Applications
- Protected high-side power switching in 12 V automotive electrical systems
- Individually controlled battery-powered loads requiring current limiting
- Automotive power-distribution channels requiring load-current measurement
- Electronic control units that need fault diagnostics and thermal protection
- Compact high-current switching paths where low on-resistance is important
Design considerations
The TPS1HC03-Q1 is supplied in an 11-pin, wettable-flank VQFN-HR package measuring 2.2 mm × 3.6 mm with 0.55 mm pitch. This compact footprint can help reduce board area, while the wettable flanks support visual inspection of solder joints.
Designers should account for the device’s 3 V to 28 V operating range, the intended DC load current, and selection of the adjustable current-limit setting within the 20 A to 57 A range. Thermal design remains important for high-current use, particularly because on-resistance rises with temperature. The available current-sense output and diagnostic functions can also be incorporated into system monitoring and fault-handling logic.
