Introduction
Texas Instruments’ TPS544A28 family comprises 12 A synchronous buck converters for compact point-of-load power systems. The devices combine integrated MOSFETs, differential remote sensing, and PMBus 1.4 configuration and telemetry in a 19-pin WQFN-HR package. Their use of adaptive on-time D-CAP4 control is notable because it eliminates the need for an external compensation network.
What it does
TPS544A28 devices step down an input supply to a regulated output from 0.4 V to 5.5 V, delivering up to 12 A continuously. The input range is 4 V to 16 V without an external bias supply, or 2.7 V to 16 V when an external VCC bias is used.
Differential remote sensing supports regulation at the load rather than only at the converter output, helping address voltage drops in high-current distribution paths. With internal feedback, the specified output-voltage accuracy is ±1% across a −40°C to +150°C junction-temperature range.
The family integrates both high-side and low-side MOSFETs, specified at 8.5 mΩ and 3.0 mΩ respectively at a 3.3 V VCC supply. Selectable switching frequencies range from 500 kHz to 1.4 MHz, allowing the converter configuration to be matched to system design requirements.
PMBus 1.4 support enables configuration and telemetry through a clock rate of up to 1 MHz. Current telemetry is specified to ±7.5% for loads of 6 A or greater. Selected PMBus parameters can be retained in internal nonvolatile memory, while pin straps provide another method for configuring operating parameters. Eco-mode and Forced Continuous Conduction Mode are selectable.
Applications
- Point-of-load rails requiring up to 12 A of regulated current
- Digital loads needing a low-voltage supply between 0.4 V and 5.5 V
- Systems where remote sensing is useful for compensating distribution-path voltage drop
- Managed power rails that benefit from PMBus configuration and telemetry
- Compact multi-rail designs using synchronous step-down conversion
Design considerations
The TPS544A28 is supplied in a 19-pin WQFN-HR package, so PCB layout, thermal design, and high-current routing require attention. Differential remote-sense connections should be routed appropriately to the regulated load.
Designers should select the intended switching frequency from the available 500 kHz to 1.4 MHz options and account for the applicable input-supply arrangement: 4 V to 16 V without external bias, or down to 2.7 V when using a 3.1 V to 4.5 V external VCC bias. PMBus-connected designs should also consider the device’s configuration, telemetry, and nonvolatile parameter capabilities.
