SC2 is a high-precision, four-terminal surface-mount wirewound resistor series for current-sensing and power applications.
Introduction
Bourns’ SC2 Series is a surface-mount wirewound resistor family designed for high-precision current-sensing and power-resistor duties. Its four-terminal construction, low-resistance options down to 0.005 Ω, and support for currents up to 25 A make the series relevant where resistance measurement accuracy and high-current handling must coexist on a surface-mount assembly.
The range is also notable for combining a 2 W rating at 70°C with operation across a wide -55°C to +275°C temperature range. Non-inductive winding variants are available for designs where winding inductance is an integration concern.
What it does
SC2 resistors provide a controlled resistance element for sensing current, dissipating power, or establishing precise resistance values in electronic circuits. Available values span 0.005 Ω to 1 kΩ, covering both low-ohmic current-sense positions and higher-resistance precision applications.
The four-terminal configuration is particularly suited to low-resistance measurement, where separating the current-carrying and sensing connections can help account for connection resistance in the measurement path. The series offers tolerance options from ±0.005% through ±0.1%; for resistance values above 100 Ω, specified options include ±0.05% tolerance with a ±10 ppm/°C temperature coefficient of resistance.
For electrically demanding environments, the family is specified for 1000 VAC dielectric strength, more than 1000 MΩ dry insulation resistance, and high surge-handling capability.
Applications
- High-current current-sensing paths in power electronics
- Precision resistance and feedback networks
- Power-dissipation positions requiring a surface-mount resistor
- Circuits operating across wide temperature ranges
- Designs that require low resistance values and up to 25 A current capability
- Applications where non-inductive wirewound resistor variants are appropriate
Design considerations
SC2 devices are surface-mount components, so board layout, land pattern selection, and thermal connection to the PCB should be considered alongside the 2 W rating at 70°C. Designs using the lowest resistance values should also account for the four-terminal connection arrangement and preserve separate current and sensing paths where applicable.
Maximum current is specified at 25 A, while the operating range extends to +275°C. Actual operating conditions should therefore be evaluated against both dissipation and temperature requirements. The selected resistance value, tolerance, and—where relevant—temperature coefficient should match the precision needs of the circuit. Components are supplied in quantities of 200 pieces per reel.
