Introduction

The ECS ECS-320-CDX-2662 is a 32MHz surface-mount quartz crystal resonator intended for compact precision frequency-control and clock-generation circuits. It uses an AT-cut, fundamental-mode crystal element in a 1.6mm × 1.2mm ceramic package, combining a small footprint with operation across a -40°C to +125°C temperature range.

Its 6pF load capacitance and fundamental-mode operation make it suited to oscillator circuits designed around a 32MHz crystal reference, while the package includes gold-plated terminals and MSL 1 moisture-sensitivity performance.

What it does

This device provides a stable 32MHz resonant frequency for circuits that require an external crystal reference. In a typical oscillator implementation, the connected IC and its supporting capacitors use the crystal to establish the operating clock frequency.

The ECS-320-CDX-2662 specifies an initial frequency tolerance of -9ppm to +11ppm at +25°C ±3°C. It has a typical equivalent series resistance of 40Ω, with a 60Ω maximum specification, and a 6pF load capacitance. Drive-level requirements are also modest: 10µW typical, with a 200µW maximum.

The crystal is rated for a -40°C to +125°C operating range. Its listed reliability coverage includes testing against multiple AEC-Q200 criteria, and the component specifies 2000V HBM ESD performance.

Applications

  • Clock-reference circuits requiring a 32MHz crystal
  • Compact microcontroller or processor oscillator circuits
  • Frequency-reference sections of embedded electronics
  • Surface-mount clock-generation designs operating across an extended temperature range
  • Space-constrained electronic assemblies requiring a 1.6mm × 1.2mm crystal package

Design considerations

The oscillator circuit should be designed for the crystal’s 6pF load capacitance, including the effects of external load capacitors and PCB parasitics. Designers should also verify that the oscillator can operate with the specified ESR, up to 60Ω, and that its crystal-drive level remains below the 200µW maximum.

Because this is a fundamental-mode, 32MHz AT-cut crystal, it should be used with circuitry intended for fundamental-mode operation at that frequency. The compact ceramic surface-mount package requires appropriate PCB land-pattern, assembly, and handling practices. MSL 1 indicates the component’s stated moisture-sensitivity classification, while the 2000V HBM ESD rating does not eliminate the need for standard ESD controls during manufacturing and integration.
