Introduction

Microchip Technology’s Building Block Solutions Automotive LDOs Board is a modular demonstration and evaluation platform for comparing multiple low-dropout linear regulator (LDO) circuits on one board. Rather than focusing on a single regulator, it brings together nine independent, labeled submodules based on Microchip automotive LDO devices.

The board is technically useful for early power-management investigation because it spans regulator circuits with different input-voltage and output-current ranges. It also provides a common platform for examining fixed and adjustable output implementations without building each circuit from scratch.

What it does

The board implements nine LDO circuits:

  • MCP1722
  • MAQ5283
  • MCP1781
  • MCP1826S
  • MCP1825S
  • MAQ5300
  • MCP1726
  • MIC5233
  • MCP1793

Each circuit is presented as an independent submodule, allowing users to test or compare the regulators individually. Across the submodules, the stated input-voltage range extends from 2.1 V to 100 V, while output-current capability ranges from 20 mA to 1 A.

Preconfigured output voltages, connectors, and test points support practical bench evaluation. The MAQ5283, MCP1781, and MCP1726 submodules include adjustable-output provisions, enabling evaluation of output-voltage configuration in addition to the board’s preconfigured regulator circuits.

Applications

  • Comparing LDO regulator circuits during power-tree development
  • Evaluating low-dropout linear regulation for automotive-oriented electronics
  • Prototyping regulated low-voltage rails from a range of input supplies
  • Reviewing fixed-output and adjustable-output regulator implementations
  • Bench testing regulator behavior using accessible test points and connectors
  • Educational or laboratory demonstrations of linear-regulator circuit options

Design considerations

The board should be treated as a multi-circuit evaluation platform rather than as a single regulator design. Its nine submodules cover a broad overall input range, from 2.1 V to 100 V, and a broad current range, from 20 mA to 1 A; the applicable limits therefore depend on the particular LDO submodule being evaluated.

Integration work should also account for whether a fixed-output or adjustable-output circuit is needed. Adjustable output is specifically provided on the MAQ5283, MCP1781, and MCP1726 sections, while the board otherwise includes preconfigured output voltages. The supplied connectors and test points are intended to support measurement and comparison during evaluation.
