Introduction
Murata Electronics’ Type 2JM, part number LBWA0ZZ2JM-001, is an ultra-compact embedded wireless MCU module for battery-powered IoT equipment. Built around Qualcomm’s QCC730 micropower Wi-Fi chip, it combines dual-band Wi-Fi 4 connectivity with an integrated Arm Cortex-M4 processor and onboard memory in a surface-mount format measuring just 8.47 mm × 8.1 mm × 2.35 mm.
Its technical interest lies in bringing IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n operation across both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands into a small module that also provides the processing and peripheral interfaces needed for embedded wireless designs.
What it does
The Type 2JM provides SISO Wi-Fi connectivity using 20 MHz channels, with data-rate capability up to MCS3. It supports the IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n standards, allowing operation in either commonly used Wi-Fi frequency band.
The module integrates a 60 MHz Cortex-M4 processor, 1.5 MB of RRAM, and 640 KB of SRAM. It can also support external flash memory and execute-in-place (XiP) booting. This combination makes it suitable for embedded designs where Wi-Fi communications, local firmware execution, and memory resources need to be incorporated within a compact module.
Available interfaces include one peripheral SPI port, one controller QSPI port, one controller I²C port, a two-wire UART, and 15 GPIOs. These interfaces enable connection to external memory, sensors, controllers, and other peripherals.
Applications
- Battery-powered connected sensors and wireless monitoring nodes
- Compact IoT devices requiring 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi connectivity
- Embedded products that need SPI, QSPI, I²C, UART, or GPIO-connected peripherals
- Space-constrained wireless controllers using an integrated Cortex-M4 MCU
- IoT equipment operating across an ambient range of -20 °C to +85 °C
Design considerations
The Type 2JM is a surface-mount module, so PCB footprint planning, assembly processes, and rework procedures should account for its 8.47 mm × 8.1 mm × 2.35 mm dimensions and MSL-3 moisture sensitivity classification.
Designers should also plan the host architecture around the module’s available interface roles: SPI is specified as a peripheral interface, while QSPI and I²C are controller interfaces. External flash support and XiP booting may be relevant where application storage requirements exceed the integrated 1.5 MB RRAM and 640 KB SRAM resources.
The module supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi operation, so RF and system design should accommodate the intended operating band. Its specified operating temperature range is -20 °C to +85 °C.
