Introduction
Abracon’s AANI-NI-0245 family is a compact 2.4 GHz SMD chip-antenna solution for short-range wireless designs. Based on Abracon’s patented Niche technology, the family targets products where antenna size and PCB integration are important, while supporting the 2400 MHz to 2500 MHz band used by several common wireless protocols.
The antennas combine a 1.0 mm × 0.5 mm package with PCB-edge mounting and linear omnidirectional radiation characteristics, making them relevant to highly space-constrained connected devices.
What it does
The AANI-NI-0245 is designed to provide an RF antenna function across the 2.4 GHz ISM band. Its stated frequency coverage of 2400 MHz to 2500 MHz encompasses Bluetooth, ZigBee, Thread, Matter, and Wi-Fi implementations operating in that range.
Abracon specifies a 3.6 dBi peak gain, efficiency greater than 85%, and return loss below -10 dB. The antenna uses linear polarization and an omnidirectional radiation pattern. It is supplied as a surface-mount chip antenna intended for placement at the edge of a PCB.
Its operating-temperature range is specified from -55 °C to +125 °C, and the device carries an MSL 1 rating.
Applications
Potential uses that follow directly from its frequency range, form factor, and mounting arrangement include:
- Bluetooth-enabled medical wearables and other compact on-body devices
- Consumer hearables with 2.4 GHz wireless connectivity
- ZigBee, Thread, or Matter wireless nodes
- Small Wi-Fi-connected products operating in the 2.4 GHz band
- Space-constrained PCB designs requiring an edge-mounted SMD antenna
Design considerations
The AANI-NI-0245 uses a very small 1.0 mm × 0.5 mm SMD package, so PCB land pattern, placement accuracy, and nearby RF layout can be significant integration considerations. It is explicitly intended for PCB-edge mounting; designers should account for this placement requirement during board outline and mechanical layout planning.
The antenna is specified for the 2400 MHz to 2500 MHz range, so it should be selected only for designs whose required wireless operation falls within that band. Its linear polarization and omnidirectional radiation pattern are also relevant when considering device orientation and the intended RF coverage around the product.
For manufacturing, the MSL 1 rating and surface-mount construction should be considered alongside the assembly process and applicable PCB constraints.
