Square D SDSA Type 1 Surge Protective Devices
Square DTCC-2026-10-01-square-d-sdsa-type-1-surge-protective-devices
SDSA Type 1 surge protective devices provide single-phase surge suppression for 120 VAC and 120/240 VAC electrical systems.
Introduction
Square D’s SDSA Type 1 Surge Protective Devices are surge-suppression solutions for single-phase electrical systems. The family addresses 120 VAC installations with the two-wire SDSA05 and 120/240 VAC systems with the three-wire SDSA15. Both models are intended to minimize the damaging effects of surge events, with a NEMA 4X enclosure supporting indoor or outdoor installation.
What it does
The SDSA family provides Type 1 surge protection for electrical systems operating at its specified voltage ratings. The SDSA05 is designed for 120 VAC systems, while the SDSA15 supports 120 VAC/240 VAC systems. SDSA15 devices may also be installed in pairs to provide suppression for 208Y/120 VAC, three-phase, four-wire systems.
Devices in the family have a 150 V maximum continuous operating voltage and a 100 kA short-circuit current rating. Their listed single-surge impulse rating and surge-current rating are both 36 kA, with a nominal discharge current of 10 kA.
A green LED provides normal-operation status indication. The units use 14 AWG wire leads with a 609.6 mm cable length.
Applications
- Surge suppression on 120 VAC single-phase electrical systems using the SDSA05.
- Surge protection for 120/240 VAC single-phase systems using the SDSA15.
- Paired SDSA15 installations on 208Y/120 VAC three-phase, four-wire systems.
- Indoor or outdoor electrical installations requiring a NEMA 4X enclosure.
Design considerations
System voltage and wiring arrangement determine the appropriate SDSA model: the SDSA05 uses a two-wire configuration for 120 VAC systems, while the SDSA15 uses a three-wire configuration for 120/240 VAC systems. For 208Y/120 VAC three-phase, four-wire applications, the supplied information specifies installing SDSA15 units in pairs.
The enclosure measures 57.15 mm by 57.15 mm. Depth is 49.15 mm for the SDSA05 and 68.6 mm for the SDSA15, so installation space should account for the selected version. The 609.6 mm lead length and 14 AWG wire leads are also integration factors when planning the connection layout.
