Introduction

The DFRobot Gravity SEN0692 is a 6DOF inertial measurement unit module based on the Bosch BMI323. It combines a three-axis accelerometer with a three-axis gyroscope, providing a compact interface for measuring linear acceleration, angular velocity, tilt, vibration, and general motion.

As part of DFRobot’s Gravity ecosystem, the module supports both Gravity-compatible connectivity and standard I²C or UART communication. Integrated motion functions—including step counting, tap, tilt, free-fall, and activity recognition—allow projects to detect common motion events without relying solely on raw sensor data.

What it does

The SEN0692 provides six motion-sensing axes: three accelerometer axes and three gyroscope axes. The accelerometer offers selectable ranges from ±2g to ±16g, while the gyroscope supports angular-rate ranges from ±125°/s through ±2000°/s. Both sensing sections use 16-bit ADC resolution.

For applications that need frequent sensor updates, the accelerometer and gyroscope can operate at output data rates from 12.5Hz to 6400Hz in High Performance or Normal modes. Low-power operating modes are also specified, with the accelerometer supporting 0.78125Hz output at 400Hz low-power mode and the gyroscope supporting output rates from 0.78125Hz to 400Hz in Low Power mode.

A 2048-byte FIFO buffer can hold motion data for later retrieval, while two programmable interrupt pins provide a means to signal motion events or data conditions to a host controller. The module’s supported I²C addresses—0x4A by default, plus 0x4B, 0x4C, and 0x4D—can be useful where more than one compatible device must be addressed on an I²C bus.

Applications

  • Motion and orientation sensing in embedded-controller projects
  • Tilt, tap, and free-fall event detection
  • Step-counting or activity-recognition prototypes
  • Vibration and acceleration measurement
  • Angular-rate measurement for moving mechanisms
  • Multi-sensor I²C systems using configurable device addresses

Design considerations

The module operates from a 3.3V DC to 5V DC supply and specifies an operating current of 3.1mA. Host designs can communicate through I²C or UART, using either the PH2.0-4P Gravity connector or the 2.54mm pin-header holes.

Its 32mm × 27mm PCB includes mounting holes with 20mm spacing and a 3.1mm diameter, which should be considered when planning mechanical integration. The kit includes a Gravity 4P sensor cable and a 10-pin, 2.54mm single-row pin header.

Range and data-rate configuration should be selected according to the expected motion. For example, accelerometer ranges extend to ±16g and gyroscope ranges to ±2000°/s, while lower ranges may be appropriate where smaller motion signals are being measured. The listed gyroscope sensitivity error differs with self-calibration status, so calibration strategy is also an integration consideration.
