Introduction

DFRobot’s Gravity SEN0694 is a 9DOF IMU development module for detecting motion, heading, and orientation. It combines three complementary sensing functions—linear acceleration, angular velocity, and magnetic field—on a compact Gravity-series module, with either I2C or UART connectivity for integration into embedded systems.

The module combines Bosch BMI323 inertial sensing with a Bosch BMM350 magnetometer, providing a sensor set suited to systems that need to observe movement and rotational behaviour alongside magnetic-field measurements.

What it does

The SEN0694 integrates a 3-axis accelerometer and 3-axis gyroscope in the Bosch BMI323, plus a 3-axis Bosch BMM350 magnetometer. Together, these sensors provide nine degrees of freedom for measuring acceleration, rotation, and magnetic-field direction.

Its accelerometer supports ranges up to ±16g, while the gyroscope supports ranges up to ±2000°/s. The magnetometer measures magnetic fields up to ±2000µT. An output data rate of up to 6400Hz enables the module to deliver measurements at rates appropriate for responsive motion-sensing designs.

The module accepts a 3.3V to 5V supply and supports plug-and-play communication through I2C or UART. This gives designers a choice between a shared serial bus and a direct serial interface when connecting the sensor to a microcontroller or development board.

Applications

  • Motion and orientation sensing in embedded prototypes
  • Heading-aware devices using magnetic-field measurements
  • Robotics projects that require acceleration, angular-rate, and magnetometer data
  • Gesture, movement, or tilt-detection interfaces
  • Data-logging systems for motion and environmental magnetic-field observation
  • Educational and development platforms using Gravity-compatible sensor modules

Design considerations

The SEN0694 measures 32mm × 27mm and weighs 10g, which should be considered when fitting it into compact or weight-sensitive assemblies.

Designers can select either I2C or UART according to the host system’s available interfaces and firmware architecture. The 3.3V to 5V operating supply range may simplify integration with systems operating at either common logic supply level, but the host design should still account for the selected interface and supply arrangement.

Sensor range selection is also relevant to the expected motion profile. Applications subject to higher acceleration or faster rotation can use the available ranges up to ±16g and ±2000°/s, while magnetic-field measurements are specified up to ±2000µT. Systems using heading or orientation data should account for the installation environment and the presence of nearby magnetic fields.
