Introduction

The DFRobot Fermion SEN0695 is a compact 9-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) module that combines Bosch’s BMI323 6-axis accelerometer/gyroscope with the BMM350 3-axis magnetometer. Measuring 24 mm × 19 mm, it brings acceleration, angular-rate, and magnetic-field sensing together on a single I²C-connected board.

The combination of configurable measurement ranges, high output-data-rate options, onboard motion functions, programmable interrupts, and a 2048-byte FIFO makes the module suited to embedded motion-sensing designs where host-processor traffic and physical space need to be managed carefully.

What it does

The SEN0695 provides nine sensing axes:

  • A 3-axis accelerometer with selectable ±2 g, ±4 g, ±8 g, and ±16 g ranges
  • A 3-axis gyroscope with ranges from ±125°/s to ±2000°/s
  • A 3-axis magnetometer with a ±2000 µT measurement range

The accelerometer and gyroscope both use 16-bit ADC resolution. In High Performance or Normal mode, their output data rates span 12.5 Hz to 6400 Hz; Low Power mode supports 0.78125 Hz to 400 Hz. The magnetometer offers normal-mode data-rate selections from 1.5625 Hz to 400 Hz, with a stated magnetic-field resolution of approximately 0.1 µT.

Communication is through I²C. The BMI323 uses address 0x69 by default, configurable to 0x68, while the BMM350 uses 0x15 by default, configurable to 0x14. A 2048-byte FIFO buffer and three programmable interrupt pins provide options for handling sensor events and collected data without requiring continuous polling.

Applications

  • Motion and orientation sensing in compact embedded devices
  • Gesture, tilt, and movement detection
  • Robotic platforms requiring acceleration, rotation, and magnetic-field measurements
  • I²C-connected sensor nodes based on Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or ESP32 platforms
  • Prototypes that require configurable accelerometer and gyroscope ranges
  • Low-power motion-monitoring designs using the module’s low-power operating mode

Design considerations

The module operates from a 3.3 V supply, with stated operating current of 0.92 mA and low-power current of 0.37 mA. Its dual-device I²C arrangement means the host design must account for the BMI323 and BMM350 addresses, particularly where other devices on the same bus use overlapping addresses.

For mechanical integration, the board is 24 mm × 19 mm and includes Ø2 mm mounting holes on 19 mm spacing. Connection options include an SH1.0-5P connector and 2.54 mm pin-header holes. Designs using interrupt-driven acquisition should also allocate connections for the module’s three programmable interrupt pins.
