Introduction
The Littelfuse LTKAK1.5-L is a surface-mount transient-voltage-suppression (TVS) diode for high-power surge-protection designs. Built with a glass-passivated chip junction in an SMTO218 package, it is designed to handle surge currents up to 1500 A for an 8/20 µs waveform while maintaining low dynamic resistance. Its combination of high surge capability and surface-mount construction makes it relevant where compact, board-level protection is needed in demanding AC or DC power equipment.
What it does
The LTKAK1.5-L clamps transient energy to help protect connected circuitry from electrical surges and electrostatic-discharge events. It supports a 1500 A peak surge-current rating for the standard 8/20 µs surge waveform and is specified for IEC 61000-4-5 Level 4 surge requirements.
For ESD exposure, the device provides protection rated to 30 kV for both air discharge and contact discharge under IEC 61000-4-2. Maximum reverse leakage current is specified as 10 µA, which can be important in designs where off-state leakage must be controlled.
The diode is intended for high-power AC and DC applications, including HVDC distribution, power supplies, EV chargers, and energy-storage systems. Its glass-passivated junction construction and low dynamic resistance are suited to transient suppression in these higher-energy environments.
Applications
- HVDC distribution equipment
- AC and DC power supplies
- EV charging equipment
- Energy-storage systems
- High-power electronic systems requiring IEC 61000-4-5 Level 4 surge support
- Interfaces or power nodes requiring IEC 61000-4-2 ESD protection
Design considerations
The LTKAK1.5-L uses an SMTO218 surface-mount package, so PCB footprint, copper area, thermal design, and assembly process compatibility should be evaluated as part of the protection-stage layout.
Designers should consider the device’s 1500 A, 8/20 µs surge-current rating in relation to the expected transient waveform and system-level surge requirement. The stated IEC 61000-4-5 Level 4 support and 30 kV air/contact ESD protection provide useful reference points for protection planning, but the final circuit should be assessed in its installed application.
The 10 µA maximum reverse leakage specification may also be relevant when selecting protection devices for DC rails or other nodes where leakage contributes to standby-current or biasing constraints. The component is lead-free and RoHS compliant, and it carries a UL 94V-0 flammability rating.
