Hydrogen Leak Detector (HLD) Analog Sensor
HoneywellTCC-2026-10-06-hydrogen-leak-detector-hld-analog-sensor
Honeywell HLD is an analog-voltage-output hydrogen leak sensor using thermal-conductivity detection to detect hydrogen concentrations from 1 ppm upward.
Introduction
Honeywell’s HLD Analog Sensor is a hydrogen leak detector based on thermal conductivity detection (TCD). It provides an analog-voltage output for monitoring hydrogen concentrations from 1 ppm resolution across a 0% to 10% H₂ sensing range, equivalent to 0 to 100,000 ppm H₂.
The sensor combines a broad 8 V DC to 36 V DC supply range with operation from -40°C to +85°C, making it relevant where hydrogen-leak monitoring must be integrated into electrically powered equipment or fixed gas-handling installations. Honeywell specifies manual-intervention-free performance for 10 years and resistance to chemical poisoning.
What it does
The HLD detects hydrogen through changes in thermal conductivity and produces an analog voltage output for use by a host monitoring or control system. Its specified response time is under 2 seconds, while startup time is under 1 second.
Its sensing range covers low-level hydrogen detection through concentrations up to 10% H₂. Specified resolution is 1 H₂ppm. Accuracy is specified as ±10% full-scale from -40°C to +65°C across both the 0% to 4% and 4% to 10% H₂ ranges; over the full -40°C to +85°C operating range, specified accuracy is ±22% full-scale.
The sensor is specified for 10% to 90% relative humidity and atmospheric pressures from 80 kPa to 110 kPa. Typical current consumption is 10 mA at a 12 V DC supply or 5 mA at 24 V DC, with a 100 mA in-rush current specified at a 16 V supply.
Applications
Potential uses that follow from the sensor’s hydrogen-leak detection function include:
- Monitoring around hydrogen storage tanks.
- Hydrogen gas-piping leak detection.
- Fuel-cell systems requiring analog hydrogen sensing.
- Hydrogen monitoring within vehicle cabins.
- Fixed installations that need an analog signal representing hydrogen concentration.
Design considerations
The HLD has an analog voltage output, so the receiving system needs an appropriate analog-input interface and interpretation of the sensor signal. System power design should accommodate the 8 V DC to 36 V DC supply range as well as the specified 100 mA in-rush current.
Environmental conditions should also be checked against the stated -40°C to +85°C operating temperature range, 10% to 90% RH humidity range, and 80 kPa to 110 kPa pressure range. For measurement performance, designers should account for the different full-scale accuracy specifications across the narrower -40°C to +65°C range and the full operating-temperature range.
