Development kit for evaluating and developing Edge AI and multimedia applications using the Open-M 720G SOM and MediaTek Genio 720 SoC.

EHBSA Series Capacitors

Introduction

The Lantronix Open-M 720G SOM Development Kit is a development platform for evaluating the Open-M 720G System-on-Module and the MediaTek Genio 720 MT8391 system-on-chip. It is intended for Edge AI and multimedia development, combining a SOM mounted on an interposer board with an open-frame carrier board.

The platform brings together compute, AI acceleration, camera and display interfaces, audio, networking, and expansion I/O in a single kit. Support for both Yocto Linux and Android 15 makes it suitable for evaluating software stacks alongside the hardware platform.

What it does

At the core of the kit is the MediaTek Genio 720 MT8391, manufactured on a 6 nm process. Its CPU configuration includes two Arm Cortex-A78 cores at 2.6 GHz and six Arm Cortex-A55 cores at 2.0 GHz, alongside an Arm Mali-G57 MC2 GPU operating at 1.1 GHz. The MediaTek eighth-generation NPU is specified for up to 10 TOPS of AI performance.

The included Open-M 720G SOM provides 8 GB of LPDDR5X memory and 64 GB of UFS storage. The development kit exposes interfaces for multimedia evaluation, including two MIPI CSI camera interfaces with D-PHY support, HDMI, embedded DisplayPort, and DisplayPort 1.4 through USB Type-C.

Connectivity provisions include Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, Ethernet, three USB Type-A ports, two Micro-USB Type-B ports, microSD, M.2 B-key, M.2 E-key, and a debug UART. Audio hardware includes a 3.5 mm headphone jack and connections for digital microphones, analog and digital microphone input, line input and output, and audio expansion boards.

The kit includes the carrier board, SOM assembly, camera, Wi-Fi antennas, power supply, and USB debug cable.

Applications

  • Edge AI software and hardware evaluation using the Genio 720 NPU
  • Camera-connected vision and multimedia prototypes
  • Display and user-interface development using HDMI, USB-C DisplayPort, or embedded DisplayPort
  • Audio capture, playback, and multi-microphone interface evaluation
  • Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and Ethernet-connected embedded systems
  • SOM-based product prototyping with GPIO, SPI, I²C, and PCM peripherals

Design considerations

The board measures 170 mm × 170 mm and uses an open-frame carrier-board arrangement, which is useful for access to its expansion and debug interfaces during development. Power can be supplied from a 12 VDC input, with external battery operation also supported. Specified power consumption is less than 4 W.

Developers integrating peripherals should account for the available interface types and connectors, including MIPI CSI for cameras, multiple display outputs, M.2 B-key and E-key sockets, USB ports, Ethernet, and the GPIO/SPI/I²C/PCM expansion header. The platform’s operating-system support is limited in the supplied information to Yocto Linux and Android 15.
