onsemi and NVIDIA Collaborate on 800V DC Power Architecture for AI Data Centres

onsemi has announced a new collaboration with NVIDIA focused on accelerating the shift toward 800 VDC power architectures, a change that could redefine how energy is distributed inside AI data centres.

While most of today’s infrastructure still relies on traditional 48V or 12V bus systems, next-generation AI workloads are pushing energy demands far beyond what those standards were designed for. The proposed move to 800V direct current power delivery isn’t just an incremental improvement; it’s a structural overhaul aimed at cutting conversion losses, increasing power density, and enabling greater energy efficiency at scale.

Why 800V DC?

Power loss in data centres often happens during voltage conversion. Every time voltage is stepped down, from the grid to the server level, some efficiency is lost. With 800VDC, fewer conversion steps are needed, and the ones that remain can be executed more efficiently. That means less heat, lower energy waste, and smaller footprints for power hardware, exactly what hyperscale operators want when deploying dense AI clusters.

onsemi’s Role in the Stack

onsemi brings a complete portfolio of intelligent power solutions that spans the entire power chain: from high-voltage AC/DC conversion at the substation, through solid-state transformers, SiC-based 800VDC distribution systems, and down to voltage regulation at the processor itself.

The company’s expertise in both silicon and silicon carbide (SiC) technologies enables power conversion at much higher voltages and frequencies, with better thermal performance and smaller magnetics. Combined with intelligent control and monitoring, these systems become not just efficient but manageable at scale.
