Electrostatic discharge is one of those invisible hazards that every engineer has to plan for. A single strike can take out an interface, shut down a system, or shorten a product’s life in the field. Vishay Intertechnology has expanded its Automotive Grade protection range with two new diode series, the VGSOTxx and VGSOTxxC, aimed at bringing higher current ratings to the familiar SOT-23 package.
Covering stand-off voltages from 3.3 V to 36 V, the devices can absorb up to 540 W of peak pulse power and currents of 44 A under an 8/20 µs surge. That level of protection, packed into a tiny outline, means designers can strengthen their ESD defences without giving up board space or changing existing layouts.
Device Options and Design Flexibility
The single-line VGSOTxx devices are intended for unidirectional protection, while the VGSOTxxC adds a dual common-anode design that supports bidirectional use. For situations that demand extra headroom, engineers can parallel the two diodes inside the VGSOTxxC to double the surge capability, trading off some additional capacitance and leakage.
From the datasheet, the VGSOT03 shows a typical capacitance of around 460 pF at 0 V and clamping voltages between 5.7 V and 7.5 V when tested at 1 A. Forward voltage is about 1.1 V at 1 A, giving designers a clear indication of how the parts behave under real surge conditions. These details make it easier to balance protection against added capacitance on sensitive lines.
Standards and Long-Term Reliability
Both series comply with IEC 61000-4-2 and ISO 10605, achieving ±30 kV immunity for air and contact discharge. They also pass AEC-Q101 H3B (> 8 kV) testing, reinforcing their suitability for automotive and industrial systems where repeated ESD strikes are a reality.
The operating range of –55 °C to +150 °C and Vishay’s Automotive Grade qualification underline long-term reliability. Designers can also treat them as drop-in replacements for Vishay’s older GSOT family and competing SOT devices, reducing the friction of upgrading to a higher-performing solution.
Application Scope
The strength of these new diodes is their versatility. Automotive controls, fuel cell systems, smart metering, industrial automation, and power tools are all natural fits. But the same characteristics also make them useful in telecom infrastructure, consumer appliances, medical instrumentation, and even defence electronics where ESD resilience can be mission-critical.
Availability
The VGSOTxx and VGSOTxxC series are available now in sample and production quantities, with typical lead times of 12 weeks.
For engineers needing compact devices that can withstand high-energy surges, these diodes offer a straightforward upgrade path that combines strong electrical performance with the assurance of automotive-grade qualification.
