Bourns Launches Copper-Electrode MOV Series for High-Energy Surge Protection

Uploaded image Bourns has introduced the MOV-07DxxxKC, MOV-10DxxxKC, MOV-14DxxxKC and MOV-20DxxxKC Series metal oxide varistors for high-energy and high-surge overvoltage protection in line-voltage systems.

The radial-leaded transient voltage suppressors are available in 7 mm, 10 mm, 14 mm and 20 mm disc sizes, giving designers a choice of surge capability across several line-voltage classes. The new series uses copper-based electrodes, with Bourns stating that the construction delivers surge and energy performance comparable to traditional silver-electrode MOVs.

Surge Ratings Up to 6,500 A

The four MOV series are rated for 8/20 µs surge waveforms, with peak surge current depending on disc size and voltage rating. Peak surge current depends on the disc size and voltage rating, reaching 1,200 A for the 7 mm series, 2,500 A for the 10 mm series, 4,500 A for the 14 mm series and 6,500 A for the 20 mm series.

Varistor voltage options run from 200 V to 820 V for the 7 mm and 10 mm discs, and from 200 V to 1,800 V for the 14 mm and 20 mm discs. Maximum continuous voltage ranges from 130 V to 510 VRMS for the two smaller sizes and from 130 V to 1,100 VRMS for the 14 mm and 20 mm devices.

Typical response time across the series is between 10 ns and 25 ns, while varistor voltage tolerance is specified at ±10%.

Four Disc Sizes and Multiple Lead Options

Using several disc diameters allows the required surge and energy capability to be selected without changing the basic MOV protection approach. Bourns also offers straight leads, outward-kinked leads and in-line kinked leads to suit different PCB layouts and assembly requirements. All four series operate across a temperature range of -40°C to +105°C.

The MOV-xxDxxxKC family is UL 1449 recognized and RoHS compliant.

Bourns is targeting the devices at AC power supplies, power distribution systems, line-voltage protection circuits, telecommunications equipment, white goods and household appliances.

The MOV-07DxxxKC, MOV-10DxxxKC, MOV-14DxxxKC and MOV-20DxxxKC Series are available through Bourns’ authorized distribution network.
