TDK Introduces 500 V AC Y1 Safety Capacitors for 125°C Operation

TDK introduces B3201*A5/B5/C5 Y1 safety film capacitors rated for 500 V AC and 1500 V DC, offering operation up to +125°C with derating, AEC-Q200 Rev. E compliance and humidity resistance for EMI filtering.

1.png TDK's new B3201*A5/B5/C5 series uses metallized polypropylene film and offers capacitance values from 0.47 to 33 nF for line-to-ground EMI suppression in automotive and industrial power electronics.

The capacitors are aimed at xEV power electronics, on-board chargers and EV charging infrastructure, as well as industrial drives, power supplies, renewable energy converters and energy storage systems. Alongside the 500 V AC rating, the series supports DC voltages up to 1500 V and meets AEC-Q200 Rev. E requirements.

The range is available with lead spacings of 15 and 22.5 mm. B32012 variants cover 0.47 to 10 nF, with minimum dimensions of 5.0 × 10.5 × 18.0 mm, while B32013 types cover 5.6 to 33 nF. Both use parallel wire leads for conventional through-hole mounting.

High-Temperature Operation with Voltage Derating

The B3201*A5/B5/C5 capacitors are rated for continuous operation at 500 V AC or 1500 V DC at temperatures up to +110°C. TDK has extended the maximum operating temperature to +125°C, although the full voltage ratings do not apply throughout this upper temperature range.

Above +110°C, the operating voltage must be reduced by 1.5% for every degree Celsius increase. Operation between +110°C and +125°C is also limited to a maximum of 1,000 hours.

Humidity Resistance and Safety Approvals

For applications exposed to heat and humidity, TDK has tested the new series at +85°C, 85% relative humidity and 500 V AC for 500 hours. The capacitors use self-healing metallized polypropylene construction, while the plastic case and epoxy resin sealing meet UL 94 V-0 flammability requirements.

The series is approved according to IEC/EN/UL 60384-14, CSA E60384-14 and GB/T 6346.14. The components are also RoHS-compatible and are available untaped or in ammo-pack and reel configurations.

Technology Overview

TDK B3201*A5/B5/C5 is a series of Y1 safety-class metallized polypropylene film capacitors for line-to-ground EMI suppression. The capacitors offer 500 V AC and 1500 V DC ratings, capacitance values from 0.47 to 33 nF and operation up to +125°C with derating above +110°C. The series is AEC-Q200 Rev. E compliant and has undergone temperature, humidity and bias testing at +85°C, 85% relative humidity and 500 V AC for 500 hours.

FAQs

What voltage ratings do TDK's B3201*A5/B5/C5 capacitors support?

The capacitors are rated for 500 V AC and up to 1500 V DC at temperatures up to +110°C. Voltage derating applies at higher temperatures.

Can the TDK Y1 capacitors operate at +125°C?

Yes, but voltage must be reduced by 1.5% per degree Celsius above +110°C, with operation in this temperature range limited to 1,000 hours.

What capacitance values and package sizes are available?

The B32012 variants offer 0.47 to 10 nF with 15 mm lead spacing, while the B32013 variants cover 5.6 to 33 nF with 22.5 mm lead spacing.
