Cetecom Advanced, a leading test laboratory for communication technologies, has officially certified the Rohde & Schwarz NG eCall test solution for verifying next-generation emergency call (NG eCall) functionality in vehicles. Based on the CMX500 radio communication tester and its NG eCall option (CMX-KA098), the solution enables full end-to-end testing of IMS-based emergency services over 4G and 5G networks.
NG eCall is the next evolution of the European eCall system, transitioning from traditional circuit-switched connections to packet-switched, IP-based communication via the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). This not only improves the quality and reliability of voice and data transmission in emergencies but also lays the groundwork for advanced telematics and connected car applications.
The Rohde & Schwarz solution simulates both the mobile network and the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), supporting complete IMS call setups and IP-based data exchanges in line with current 3GPP and CEN standards. It has successfully passed all required test scenarios for the PSAP element under EN 17240:2024, ensuring compliance with key European regulatory requirements for NG eCall certification systems.
Cetecom Advanced is now using the certified system to carry out:
Functional testing
Protocol conformance testing
Type-approval of in-vehicle systems (IVS) that implement NG eCall functionality
The ability to emulate real-world network conditions, including 4G and 5G coverage scenarios, enables automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers to prepare new vehicle models for certification and launch with confidence.
“The certification of Rohde & Schwarz’ test solution is a major milestone for us,” said Thomas Reschka, Senior Technical Consultant at Cetecom Advanced. “With this solution, we are technologically well-equipped for the requirements of IMS-based emergency call communication and can support our customers in the development and type-approval of NG eCall systems.”
“The partnership with cetecom advanced allows us to offer innovative test solutions that meet the highest safety standards,” added Christoph Pointner, Senior Vice President Mobile Radio Testers at Rohde & Schwarz. “With our NG eCall test solution, we support automotive manufacturers in developing and implementing life-saving technologies.”
As NG eCall adoption increases across Europe, the partnership between Rohde & Schwarz and Cetecom Advanced will help accelerate the deployment of next-generation in-vehicle safety systems, ensuring they meet regulatory expectations and deliver reliable emergency connectivity when it matters most.
