Renesas has introduced a new addition to its RA family of microcontrollers, the RA2T1 series, aimed squarely at engineers developing single-motor systems. These MCUs are purpose-built for compact, cost-sensitive products like fans, vacuums, hair dryers, and cordless power tools, where tight control and reliability are non-negotiable.
At the heart of the RA2T1 is an Arm Cortex-M23 core running at 64 MHz, backed by 64KB of flash and a streamlined set of analog peripherals. What sets this series apart is how tightly it focuses on the real-world needs of BLDC motor control, both in precision and in safety.
Motor performance often comes down to how well current feedback is handled. The RA2T1 includes a three-channel sample-and-hold ADC, allowing simultaneous measurement of all three motor phases. This improves accuracy over the sequential sampling methods still used in many lower-cost MCUs. For engineers working on sensorless or trapezoidal control, that matters.
Another practical feature is the integrated PWM with complementary output and dead-time insertion. It’s a mouthful, but in plain terms, it saves the need to manually manage high- and low-side gate timing, simplifying the inverter stage.
One of the areas Renesas has clearly paid attention to is fault handling. The RA2T1 includes a high-speed comparator that can shut down PWM outputs the moment an overcurrent condition is detected. You can configure how the shutdown behaves based on your inverter design. That level of control is usually found in larger MCUs.
Additional safety functions include SRAM parity checking, illegal memory access detection, and self-diagnosis of ADC integrity.
These MCUs are available in a range of QFN and LQFP packages, from 24 pins up to 48, and operate across a wide voltage range (1.6V to 5.5V), with temperatures from -40°C to 125°C. They also slot into Renesas' Flexible Software Package (FSP), giving access to drivers, RTOS support, networking, security stacks, and middleware for motor control or even AI applications.
Renesas backs this with its Motor Workbench tuning tool and evaluation kits compatible with PMSM/BLDC motors, making it easy to get started or migrate from other RA and RX families.
To help engineers move quickly, Renesas has paired the RA2T1 with other components from its portfolio to form a series of Winning Combinations—reference designs for cordless vacuums, ceiling fans, leaf blowers, and more. These aren’t just demos—they’re vetted hardware/software templates that reduce time-to-market.
