Würth Elektronik has released the WSEN‑ACCE filter cap, a dedicated protection accessory for its WSEN‑HIDS MEMS humidity and temperature sensor. Designed to block dust, water, and physical impact, the cap helps maintain long‑term measurement stability and extends sensor life in industrial, agricultural, and other harsh‑environment applications.
The WSEN‑ACCE can be mounted directly onto a PCB using its locating pins or secured with adhesive inside a sealed housing. Once in place, it acts as a physical barrier against contaminants while still allowing accurate humidity readings.
Humidity sensor protection for challenging conditions
The WSEN‑HIDS sensor, measuring just 1.5 × 1.5 × 0.5 mm, has been widely adopted in compact designs. However, customers working in dusty or outdoor environments needed a way to shield it without sacrificing performance. The WSEN‑ACCE addresses this with a housing made from durable PBT plastic and a finely tuned PTFE/polyester filter.
With a pore size of 1.5 microns, the filter allows water vapour to pass through while blocking dust, dirt, and other particulates that could interfere with accuracy. The minimal added delay, only a few seconds before readings stabilise, has no real‑world effect on performance. Rated to IP67 and achieving the highest AATCC 118‑1992 lipophobicity standard, the cap also resists liquid contamination in encapsulated sensor assemblies.
Calibrated, stable, and ready for integration
The WSEN‑HIDS MEMS humidity sensor is factory‑calibrated, temperature‑compensated, and offers ±1.8% RH accuracy between 20% and 80% relative humidity. Measurement data is output via an I²C interface, making integration with common microcontrollers straightforward.
At its core, the sensing element uses a dielectric polymer to absorb and release water molecules in proportion to ambient humidity. This changes the dielectric constant of a capacitor structure, enabling precise digital measurement. Würth Elektronik supports the WSEN‑HIDS with an evaluation board, FeatherWing board, and a software development kit, giving engineers a fast path from prototype to production, even in demanding environments.
Conclusion
By pairing the WSEN‑HIDS with the WSEN‑ACCE filter cap, Würth Elektronik gives engineers a compact sensing solution that can stand up to real‑world environmental challenges. The result is reliable humidity monitoring in applications where dust, moisture, and physical stress are all part of the job.
