Melexis MLX92211 IMC Adds Lateral Sensing for Compact Automotive Motors

Uploaded image Vehicle interiors are filled with compact motors that power everything from seat adjusters to sunroofs. These assemblies need to be smaller than ever, yet still meet demanding requirements for reliability and safety. Space is often the limiting factor, and through-hole sensors can restrict how slim a motor module can be built.

Melexis has expanded its MLX92211 Hall-effect latch family with a new variant that integrates a magnetic concentrator (IMC). By enabling lateral sensing in a surface-mount TSOT-3L package, the device helps engineers reduce actuator height while supporting fully automated production. For systems where every millimetre counts, this shift to lateral sensing can make a measurable difference.

Stability And Accuracy In Real Conditions

The MLX92211 IMC is more than a package change. It includes a voltage regulator that operates from 2.7 V to 24 V, an open-drain output driver, and an offset cancellation system designed to maintain accuracy under temperature variation and mechanical stress. The device also applies a negative temperature coefficient to counter the weakening of magnets at higher temperatures, which supports consistent sensing in challenging automotive environments.

Engineers can deploy the latch in either 3-wire or 2-wire mode with an external resistor. A current limit of 30 mA makes it well suited to seat motors, where continuous currents of around 25 mA are typical.

Reliability Built For Automotive

Automotive systems demand long-term resilience against electrical and mechanical stress. The MLX92211 IMC offers strong electrostatic discharge protection up to 8 kV, automatic output shut-off with self-recovery, and ASIL A functional safety readiness. These measures reduce the risk of failure while simplifying integration into designs where compliance is essential.

Applications Across The Cabin

The sensor has been developed for actuators in seat modules, window and sunroof motors, power doors, and thermal expansion valves. By combining lateral sensing with a compact SMD footprint, Melexis provides engineers with a straightforward path to slimmer, more flexible motor assemblies that do not compromise on safety or performance.
