Wolfspeed Launches 200 mm SiC Wafers for High-Volume Power Device Production

Uploaded image Wolfspeed has officially launched its 200 mm silicon carbide (SiC) materials portfolio, a step many in the industry have been waiting for. After initially sampling wafers to select partners, strong results have encouraged the company to open commercial availability.

The portfolio covers both 200 mm bare wafers and epitaxy, giving device makers the ability to qualify and scale production immediately. Wolfspeed says the latest wafers feature improved parametric specifications at 350 µm thickness and better doping and thickness uniformity across the wafer. For engineers, this should translate into higher MOSFET yields, faster ramp-up for new products, and a clearer path to competitive power device pricing.

“Wolfspeed’s 200 mm SiC wafers are more than an expansion of wafer diameter. They represent a materials innovation that empowers our customers to accelerate their device roadmaps with confidence,” said Dr. Cengiz Balkas, Chief Business Officer. “By delivering quality at scale, Wolfspeed is enabling power electronics manufacturers to meet growing demand for higher-performing, more efficient silicon carbide solutions.”

Why 200 mm Matters

Moving from 150 mm to 200 mm wafers is one of the most-watched milestones in the SiC market. A larger wafer means more die per run and higher throughput, both of which are essential as demand grows from EV traction inverters, onboard chargers, solar and wind inverters, and industrial drives. Wolfspeed notes that lessons learned from producing 200 mm wafers will also benefit its existing 150 mm line, improving yields across the board.

Industry Impact and Next Steps

With this launch, Wolfspeed becomes one of the first suppliers to make 200 mm SiC available at commercial scale. This could help ease supply constraints and gradually bring down the cost of SiC devices as more capacity comes online. For designers and procurement teams, this means shorter lead times, better device availability, and greater confidence in choosing SiC for future designs.

Wolfspeed also highlights that its experience ramping 200 mm production will continue to refine its 150 mm wafers, improving quality and reliability for customers who are not yet ready to migrate.
