NOVOSENSE Launches NSD8389-Q1 Stepper Motor Driver with 1/256 Microstepping

Uploaded image Automakers are adding more motion systems to vehicles every year, from adaptive headlights to hidden HVAC vents, and most rely on compact stepper motors. To give designers more precision and diagnostic capability, NOVOSENSE has released the NSD8389-Q1, a second-generation stepper motor driver with fine 1/256 microstepping, real-time stall detection, and a full set of protection features for automotive environments.

Features and Performance

The NSD8389-Q1 operates from 4.5 to 36 volts (40 V max) and drives up to 1.5 A full-scale current, giving engineers headroom for demanding automotive loads. Its 1/256 programmable microstepping enables very smooth, low-noise motion, which is important in systems like head-up displays or adaptive front lighting where even small vibrations are noticeable. Designers can further optimise motor behaviour with eight selectable decay modes, adjustable slew rate, dead time, and spread-spectrum PWM control.

Control is handled through a 16-bit SPI interface with daisy-chain support, simplifying multi-axis designs.

The NSD8389-Q1 can monitor the motor’s back-EMF to spot stalls in real time, allowing systems to respond quickly if motion stops or becomes obstructed. This eliminates the need for external position sensors, saving board space and reducing system cost.

Protection features cover undervoltage lockout, per-channel overcurrent monitoring, temperature warnings, and full thermal shutdown. The device can also flag open-load conditions, helping engineers catch wiring or connector faults before they cause failures in the field.

Package Options

Developers can choose between HTSSOP24 and VQFN24 packages. A and non-A variants offer different BLANK/OPL timing and default drive disable behaviour, giving flexibility for different control strategies.

Why It Matters

Automotive platforms are adding more motion-driven systems every year, but PCB space and component budgets remain tight. A driver that combines fine microstepping, diagnostics, and protections into one device allows engineers to design quieter, more reliable systems without adding external sensors or extra circuitry.
