TDK Introduces Automotive Gate Drive Transformers for 500V xEV Power Systems

Uploaded image TDK Corporation has introduced the E13 EM series, a family of automotive-qualified gate drive transformers designed for 500V battery systems in electric vehicles. The surface-mount transformers support gate drive circuits and isolated DC-DC converters, combining reinforced insulation with a compact footprint for traction inverters and auxiliary power systems.

Built on a MnZn ferrite core, the E13 EM series is intended for applications where electrical isolation and PCB space are both critical design considerations. According to TDK, the transformers support both flyback and push-pull converter topologies while meeting automotive reliability requirements.

Compact SMD Design

The E13 EM series has a surface-mount footprint of 18.6 × 14.6mm with a maximum height of 12mm. The transformers operate at typical switching frequencies between 100kHz and 400kHz and are available in multiple turns ratios to support different converter designs. Depending on the variant, inductance values range from approximately 1.8µH to 240µH, while saturation current reaches up to 9A.

According to TDK, low leakage inductance and optimized winding structures help maintain stable signal transmission in applications using fast-switching IGBTs and MOSFETs.

Reinforced Insulation for Automotive Systems

The E13 EM series provides creepage distances of up to 6.3mm and clearance distances of up to 5.5mm. The transformers comply with IEC 60664-1 and IEC 61558-2-16, supporting basic insulation at 500VDC working voltage and reinforced insulation at 300VRMS.

The components are specified for transient overvoltages of up to 2500V and have a partial discharge extinction voltage of 900V.

Qualified to AEC-Q200 Rev. E, the transformers operate across an ambient temperature range of -40°C to +150°C and are compatible with lead-free reflow soldering in accordance with JEDEC J-STD-020F.

Automotive Power Applications

TDK positions the E13 EM series for gate drive transformers in IGBT and MOSFET circuits, together with isolated flyback and push-pull DC-DC converters used in electric vehicle power electronics.

Typical applications include traction inverters, auxiliary power systems, AC-DC power supplies, and isolated DC-DC converters.
