ROHM Introduces Second-Generation RTD Terahertz Device with 4× Higher Output Power

The new device is available through the RTD-EVK-G2 Terahertz Wave Device Evaluation Kit, allowing engineers to evaluate terahertz wave generation and detection in a compact development environment.

The second-generation device uses a redesigned internal structure to deliver approximately four times the output power of the first-generation product, improving terahertz signal detection in sensing and imaging applications.

Four Times Higher Output Power

The new RTD device maintains the same 0.5 × 0.5 mm die size and 4.0 × 4.3 mm PLCC package as the previous generation while increasing maximum output power to 40 µW.

According to ROHM, the higher output improves the detectability of terahertz waves after transmission through or reflection from target materials, making the device suitable for applications requiring higher signal quality, including sensing and imaging.

Compact RTD Device for Terahertz Development

Unlike many conventional terahertz generation methods, the RTD device operates at room temperature and does not require cooling. ROHM says the RTD approach also reduces power consumption and heat generation while maintaining a compact form factor.

The company has developed the device through joint research with universities and research institutions, with first-generation samples becoming available in 2024.

Evaluation Kit Available

The RTD-EVK-G2 evaluation kit includes the second-generation RTD device, evaluation board and connection cable, allowing engineers to evaluate terahertz wave oscillation and detection without developing custom hardware.

ROHM says the kit supports development of applications including non-destructive testing, imaging, sensing, material identification and moisture detection. Evaluation kits are scheduled to become available during August 2026, with purchase requiring a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).
