Texas Instruments has introduced the TCAN6062, a CAN XL transceiver capable of data rates up to 20 Mbps and payloads of up to 2,048 bytes per frame. TI says the new device is the first commercially available CAN XL transceiver, bringing the newer CAN protocol into production hardware for industrial and robotics applications.
The TCAN6062 also supports CAN FD and CAN SIC operation, allowing it to work with existing CAN technologies while providing a route towards higher-bandwidth CAN XL networks. TI is targeting industrial robots, humanoid robots and human-machine interface systems.
CAN XL Raises Data Rates to 20 Mbps
Moving to CAN XL gives the TCAN6062 considerably more room for data than earlier generations of CAN. Frames can carry payloads as large as 2,048 bytes, compared with the maximum 64-byte payload supported by CAN FD, while the transceiver supports data rates up to 20 Mbps.
Those larger frames can carry sensor data, diagnostics, control traffic and over-the-air update data across the same network. CAN XL also supports TCP/IP tunnelling, allowing the TCAN6062 to be used where CAN and Ethernet traffic need to coexist within a system.
Importantly, moving to CAN XL does not mean abandoning earlier CAN protocols. The TCAN6062 remains compatible with CAN FD and CAN SIC operation, giving designers the option to introduce CAN XL alongside existing network architectures.
Signal Improvement for Complex CAN Networks
TI has included Signal Improvement Capability in the TCAN6062 to address ringing on networks with multiple nodes and complex topologies. According to the company, SIC can reduce ringing by as much as 80%.
The transceiver also provides protection up to ±58 V and supports a wide range of input and output voltages. TI developed the device around the CAN XL physical layer defined within ISO 11898-2:2024, a specification the company's engineers helped develop through their involvement with CAN in Automation.
