Würth Elektronik has expanded its optocoupler range with the WL-OCHS, a high-speed optocoupler for digital signal transmission between galvanically isolated circuits.
The new series supports data rates from 1 MBd to 10 MBd, with isolation voltage up to 5,000 VRMS. Switching times range from 100 ns to 1,500 ns, depending on the device. The WL-OCHS is aimed at digital interfaces where galvanic isolation is required, including microcontrollers, FPGAs and DSPs. It can also be used with UART, SPI, RS-232 and RS-485 serial interfaces.
Up to 10 MBd with 5,000 VRMS Isolation
The shorter switching times of the WL-OCHS allow digital signals to cross the isolation barrier with less delay than conventional optocouplers. Würth Elektronik offers devices covering data rates from 1 MBd through to 10 MBd.
Alongside the higher transmission speeds, the series has high common-mode transient immunity (CMTI). This keeps the optocoupler resistant to rapid voltage changes between its input and output, which can otherwise interfere with the transmitted signal.
Würth Elektronik has also designed the WL-OCHS for high EMC immunity. These characteristics are relevant in industrial electronics and other electrically noisy systems where signals still need to pass between isolated sections of a circuit.
Industrial Control and Digital Interfaces
The WL-OCHS uses a copper leadframe, which Würth Elektronik says improves resistance to corrosion and environmental influences.
The series is intended for measurement and control equipment, industrial electronics, PLCs and automation systems. Medical equipment requiring electrical isolation is another target application.
For digital designs, the supported interfaces include microcontrollers, FPGAs and DSPs, along with UART, SPI, RS-232 and RS-485 communications.
