u-blox Introduces ZED-X20T GNSS Timing Module with Sub-2.5 ns Accuracy

The new module supports four GNSS frequency bands and satellite-delivered Galileo corrections, with secure timing features and pin compatibility with the ZED-F9T.

1.png u-blox has introduced the ZED-X20T, a new GNSS timing module designed for communication networks, data centers and power grids. Extending the company's X20 platform into precision timing, the module combines nanosecond-level accuracy with security and interference protection for critical infrastructure applications.

The ZED-X20T receives signals across the L1, L2, L5 and L6 GNSS frequency bands, using measurements from multiple satellite constellations to improve ionospheric error mitigation and maintain timing performance when parts of the radio spectrum are affected by interference.

Under clear-sky conditions, the module achieves timing accuracy better than 2.5 ns (1-sigma) without corrections, improving to better than 2.0 ns (1-sigma) when Galileo High Accuracy Service (HAS) corrections are used.

All-Band GNSS Timing with Galileo Corrections

The ZED-X20T receives Galileo HAS corrections directly from satellites over the E6 signal. These corrections reduce errors associated with satellite clocks and orbits without requiring a separate correction receiver, internet connectivity for the corrections or a subscription to a correction service.

Combined with reception across four GNSS frequency bands, the satellite-delivered corrections support accurate timing in infrastructure where equipment may be distributed across different locations.

The module is intended for cellular base stations, grandmaster clocks, data-center systems and power-grid monitoring, where synchronization between geographically separated equipment is required.

Security and Compatibility with Existing Timing Designs

The ZED-X20T incorporates secure boot, authenticated GNSS navigation data and interference detection and mitigation capabilities. These functions are intended to help identify interference or suspicious signal conditions that could affect the integrity of the timing reference.

The module retains the established 17 × 22 mm ZED form factor and is pin-compatible with the existing ZED-F9T, giving equipment manufacturers an upgrade path to the new all-band timing platform without changing the module footprint.

Two versions are available for different timing architectures. The ZED-X20T-00B includes an internal temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO), while the ZED-X20T-10B supports an external frequency reference.

The ZED-F9T remains in the u-blox portfolio, with the ZED-X20T providing an additional option for systems requiring the latest timing performance and security features.

Engineering samples of the ZED-X20T are planned for December 2026.

Technology Overview

The u-blox ZED-X20T is an all-band GNSS timing module designed for synchronization in communication networks, data centers and power grids. It supports L1, L2, L5 and L6 reception and satellite-delivered Galileo HAS corrections over E6, achieving timing accuracy better than 2.0 ns (1-sigma) with corrections under clear-sky conditions. The module includes secure boot, authenticated navigation data and interference detection, and retains the 17 × 22 mm footprint and pin compatibility of the ZED-F9T.

FAQs

What timing accuracy does the u-blox ZED-X20T achieve?

The ZED-X20T achieves better than 2.5 ns timing accuracy (1-sigma) under clear-sky conditions without Galileo HAS corrections. With HAS enabled, accuracy improves to better than 2.0 ns (1-sigma).

Does the ZED-X20T require internet access for Galileo HAS corrections?

No. The module receives Galileo High Accuracy Service corrections directly from satellites over the E6 signal, without requiring internet connectivity for the corrections, a separate correction receiver or a subscription service.

What is the difference between the ZED-X20T-00B and ZED-X20T-10B?

The ZED-X20T-00B uses an internal TCXO, while the ZED-X20T-10B supports an external frequency reference. Both use the 17 × 22 mm ZED form factor and are pin-compatible with the ZED-F9T.
