Toshiba’s New CCD Linear Image Sensor Cuts Noise and Simplifies High-Speed Scanning
Toshiba Electronics Europe has introduced the TCD2728DG, a lens reduction type CCD linear image sensor designed for A3 multifunction printers and other precision scanning equipment. The sensor targets two common engineering challenges in high-speed imaging, random noise and system integration complexity.
Key Improvements Over Previous Models
Compared to Toshiba’s earlier TCD2726DG, the new device achieves an approximate 40% reduction in random noise (NDσ). This is largely due to a change in output amplifier gain, which lowers irregular noise without compromising signal integrity. For engineers, this means cleaner image data and fewer downstream corrections during processing.
The sensor also supports data rates up to 100 MHz (50 MHz × 2 channels), enabling faster scan cycles in high-volume applications. At these speeds, electromagnetic interference can become a significant issue, but the TCD2728DG includes an integrated timing generator and CCD driver. This reduces the number of drive terminals needed and can cut both PCB complexity and the potential for EMI-related signal degradation.
Sensor Configuration and Applications
Internally, the device uses a three-line RGB configuration, with 7500 pixels per colour channel. While optimised for A3 multifunction printers, its resolution, colour accuracy, and low-noise performance make it suitable for:
- Semiconductor inspection equipment
- Food sorting systems
- Other industrial and scientific inspection devices requiring precise, colour-accurate scanning
Design Advantages
From a system design perspective, the built-in timing generator and CCD driver reduce the need for external components, saving board space and simplifying signal routing. The lower random noise improves image quality directly at the sensor level, reducing post-processing requirements and improving throughput in time-critical scanning or inspection workflows.
