A New Approach to USB-C Power

Renesas Electronics has introduced the RAA489300 and RAA489301, two new buck controllers designed around a three-level topology for USB-C power delivery applications. By moving away from the conventional two-level approach, Renesas has created a power solution that improves efficiency while reducing system size, making it well-suited for compact devices such as multi-port USB-PD chargers, docking stations, portable power banks, robots, and drones.

How the Three-Level Topology Works

Traditional buck converters rely on a two-switch design and a relatively large inductor to regulate output. Renesas’ three-level architecture adds two switches and a flying capacitor, reducing voltage stress across each device. This allows designers to select lower voltage FETs with stronger figures of merit, cutting both conduction and switching losses.

“This three-level buck topology solution is a prime example of Renesas’ worldwide leadership in battery charging,” said Gaurang Shah, Vice President of the Power Division at Renesas. “The innovative technology includes patent-pending breakthroughs that offer our customers clear advantages over competing USB-C power offerings.”

The result is a system that operates cooler and requires a smaller inductor, with ripple current reduced to about 25% of a two-level design. Lower inductor losses and improved thermal behaviour mean less board space is needed for power circuitry, which is often a limiting factor in high-density designs.

Features and Benefits

The RAA489300 and RAA489301 controllers support a wide input and output voltage range, making them flexible enough for different battery packs and PD adapters. Integrated safety functions guard against overcharge, overtemperature, and voltage irregularities. The devices also benefit from a scalable architecture that can be adapted across various power levels.

By optimising switching behaviour, the controllers minimise wasted energy, helping extend battery life and reduce thermal stress. For engineers, this translates to more reliable systems that demand less cooling and deliver longer lifespans.

Ecosystem Support

Renesas is pairing the new controllers with design resources such as the RTK-251-SinkCharger-240W kit and the RTKA489300DE0000BU evaluation board, simplifying integration for developers. These sit within the company’s broader “Winning Combinations” platform, a catalogue of more than 400 pre-validated design solutions that combine compatible Renesas components to accelerate time-to-market.

Availability and Applications

Both controllers are available in a compact 4 × 4 mm TQFN package. Their combination of size, efficiency, and thermal performance positions them as a strong choice for next-generation USB-C systems, from high-power chargers to industrial robotics.
