YAGEO Group and KEMET Ceramic Business Group have expanded their automotive capacitor portfolio with new X8R and X8G VW80808 automotive-grade flexible termination multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) in a 0603 case size.
Designed for automotive electronics operating in harsh environments, the new capacitors combine KEMET's high-temperature dielectric technology with flexible termination and operate from -55°C to +150°C. The devices are AEC-Q200 qualified and compliant with VW80808 requirements.
The X8R offering is available with voltage ratings up to 100 V, while the X8G series extends to 630 V. Applications include battery management systems, DC/DC converters, inverters, power distribution, sensors, actuators, electronic control units and high-voltage heater circuits.
Flexible Termination Supports 5 mm Board Flex
The new MLCCs use KEMET's FT-CAP flexible termination construction, which provides board flex capability up to 5 mm. The termination is designed to reduce the risk of flex-induced cracking caused by mechanical stresses on the capacitor during PCB assembly and operation.
This is particularly relevant to automotive electronics exposed to board flex, vibration and repeated thermal cycling. YAGEO lists electric power steering ECUs, ADAS controllers, powertrain ECUs and under-hood modules among the target applications.
The flexible termination construction is also intended for power electronics including DC/DC converters and inverters, as well as battery management and onboard charger systems where the capacitors may be exposed to elevated temperatures and mechanical stress.
X8R and X8G Operation to 150°C
Both dielectric options support operation up to +150°C, extending their use into automotive locations where conventional 125°C-rated MLCCs may not be suitable. The X8R series provides voltage ratings up to 100 V, while X8G extends the range to 630 V for higher-voltage circuits. Across the wider offering, capacitance values extend from 1000 pF to 6.8 µF.
Alongside AEC-Q200 qualification and VW80808 compliance, the capacitors are RoHS and REACH compliant. The new X8R and X8G VW80808 MLCCs are intended for automotive powertrain, safety, body electronics and vehicle control systems, including electrified-vehicle applications requiring high-temperature operation and resistance to PCB flex.

Technology Overview
Flexible-termination MLCCs introduce a compliant layer within the termination structure to accommodate mechanical movement between the ceramic capacitor and PCB. This reduces stress transferred to the ceramic body when the board bends, helping address flex cracking in applications exposed to mechanical or thermal stress. X8R and X8G are high-temperature ceramic dielectric classifications supporting operation up to +150°C. The new YAGEO/KEMET devices combine these dielectrics with FT-CAP flexible termination for automotive applications.
