Rosenberger Launches GFC Automotive Fiber Connector for 50+ Gbps Links

Uploaded image Rosenberger has introduced GFC, a new glass-fiber connector system for automotive data communication supporting data rates above 50 Gbps over transmission distances of up to 40 meters.

The system is IEEE 802.3cz compliant and is intended to complement existing coaxial and differential copper connection solutions in vehicle networks. Rosenberger developed GFC for applications where higher data volumes and increasing requirements for signal integrity and electromagnetic compatibility are pushing existing in-vehicle links harder.

GFC supports OM3 and OM4 multimode fibers at 850 nm and 980 nm. It is also protocol independent, allowing use with Ethernet as well as PCIe-based applications.

Expanded-Beam Connection for Automotive Environments

The connector uses an expanded-beam principle, where light is transmitted across the fiber interface through an enlarged optically effective surface. Rosenberger says this reduces the impact of dust and other contaminants, avoids direct wear at the optical interface and helps prevent scratches on the fiber end faces.

GFC was developed for harsh automotive environments in accordance with ISO 24581 and also meets the mechanical and environmental requirements of ISO 8092 and DIN 70214. The system has also passed Arizona dust and water testing.

The connector family is available as a straight cable plug, straight cable coupler and angled PCB connector. Rosenberger has also designed the system for highly automated manufacturing and high-volume assembly.

Designed for Zonal Vehicle Architectures

Rosenberger is targeting GFC at future zonal vehicle architectures and other data-intensive in-vehicle applications. These include backbone connections between central computers and zone controllers, data aggregation and forwarding for central processing, and high-resolution camera and display links.

The system can also be used for redundant links between two central processing units and for applications requiring longer transmission distances. Beyond passenger vehicles, Rosenberger identifies mining equipment, trucks, trailers and agricultural machinery as further applications for the same connector platform.
