New Microchip dsPIC33A Chips Boost PWM and ADC Precision

Microchip expands its dsPIC33A portfolio with two new DSC families offering ultra-fast ADCs, high-resolution PWM, and robust security features. Designed for motor control, AI server power supplies, and energy systems, these controllers support SiC and GaN applications with 40 Msps ADCs and up to 78 ps PWM resolution. Ideal for safety-critical systems, they include ISO 26262 support and advanced machine learning integration.

Original source: Microchip News Release Microchip has introduced two new families of digital signal controllers (DSCs) to its dsPIC33A portfolio, delivering a major performance lift for applications requiring precision control and high-speed signal processing. The dsPIC33AK512MPS512 and dsPIC33AK512MC510 series are designed to meet the evolving demands of AI server power supplies, electric motor control systems, energy storage solutions, and advanced industrial power conversion platforms. Both families are built around a 200 MHz core and feature up to 512 KB of Flash memory. What sets them apart is their advanced integration of high-resolution PWM and ultra-fast ADCs. The dsPIC33AK512MPS512 includes 78 picosecond PWM resolution and 40 mega-samples per second ADCs, ideal for wide bandgap power systems using SiC or GaN transistors. These capabilities allow developers to fine-tune voltage and current control loops with greater accuracy and speed. The dsPIC33AK512MC510 variant focuses on multi-motor applications, offering 1.25 nanosecond PWM resolution to support precise control across multiple motors simultaneously. This makes it especially useful in robotics, HVAC, and automotive systems where coordinated motor behaviour is critical. Both DSC families support double-precision floating-point operations and feature single-cycle multiply-accumulate (MAC) instructions for efficient algorithm execution. Built-in integration with Microchip’s MPLAB Machine Learning Development Suite also gives developers a foundation for deploying AI-based control strategies at the edge. Security is a core focus for the MPS models, which include dedicated crypto accelerators, secure boot functionality, flash memory protection, and secure debug options. These enhancements make the devices suitable for use in safety- and mission-critical environments. Functional safety support includes compatibility with ISO 26262 and IEC 61508 standards. For engineers building next-generation power electronics or embedded control systems, these new DSCs from Microchip offer a powerful blend of precision, performance, and integrated security.
