Microchip Launches Off-the-Shelf Radiation-Hardened 15 W Power Converter for Space Applications

Microchip launches SA15‑28, a 15 W radiation-hardened DC-DC converter with EMI filter for high-reliability space and satellite power systems.

Microchip Technology has released the SA15‑28, a radiation-hardened 15 W DC-DC power converter designed for space systems, alongside a companion SF100‑28 EMI filter. Developed to meet the rigorous demands of space-grade applications, this off-the-shelf solution allows design teams to scale satellite power systems while reducing engineering time and cost. Built using discrete, non-hybrid construction, the SA15‑28 operates from a standard 28 V satellite bus and is qualified to MIL‑STD‑461 for EMI compliance. Its small form factor — approximately 1.68 cubic inches and weighing 60 grams — supports Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) optimisation for compact space platforms. The SA15‑28 features triple 5 V outputs suitable for feeding point-of-load converters and LDOs in FPGA and microprocessor applications. Microchip also offers customised voltage configurations to suit mission-specific requirements. To address harsh operating conditions, the converter is rated for operation between −55°C and +125°C and offers radiation tolerance up to 100 krad (TID). The companion SF100‑28 EMI filter supports up to 100 W total output and is fully compatible with Microchip’s SA50 series converters and SF200 filters, enabling engineers to build modular, flexible power systems for LEO, GEO, and deep space missions. “Microchip’s space-grade portfolio with the new SA15‑28 and SF100‑28 allows our customers to customise and scale their power systems,” said Leon Gross, Corporate Vice President. “The discrete-component construction enables greater flexibility and faster time to market.” The SA15‑28 is supported by a full suite of documentation, including worst-case analysis, electrical stress analysis, and reliability reports, critical for mission assurance in space applications. Key features:

  • 15 W isolated DC-DC converter with 5 V triple output
  • Radiation tolerant to 100 krad (TID)
  • MIL‑STD‑461-compliant EMI filtering
  • −55°C to +125°C operating range

Microchip continues to expand its space-qualified portfolio with scalable, pre-validated solutions that help reduce development risk and accelerate satellite deployment. Original press release: Microchip
