Reducing EMI in High-Speed Designs with Kyocera’s Fully Shielded 5908 Series Connectors

Kyocera’s 5908 Series board-to-board connectors combine full EMI shielding with a compact design, robust locking, and support for PCIe Gen 3 and USB 3.2.

Uploaded image In high-speed electronics, interference is the silent disruptor. As devices shrink and data rates climb, keeping signals clean becomes harder. Kyocera AVX's latest board-to-board connector, the 5908 Series, is built with that challenge in mind. It’s a 0.4 mm pitch interconnect that doesn’t just move data, it protects it.

Shielding Designed Into the Core

The 5908 Series introduces full metal shielding around both the plug and receptacle. Once mated, the connector forms a double barrier that significantly reduces noise leakage and resists external interference. This isn’t just about meeting EMI standards; it’s about maintaining stable transmission at the speeds modern devices demand. Tested to handle PCI Express Gen 3 at 8 Gbps and USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10 Gbps, it’s well within the range needed for next-generation consumer and industrial electronics.

Mechanical Security for Portable Designs

Portable devices are not gentle on connectors. Movement, vibration, and repeated handling all put stress on the interface. To counter this, Kyocera has built in a locking mechanism where the plug’s convex profile mates securely with the receptacle’s concave form. The result is a 30 percent boost in retention force compared to earlier models. The edges are shaped for smoother assembly, helping manufacturers avoid alignment issues during production.

Built for Tight Spaces and Harsh Conditions

At just 4.2 mm wide and with a 2.0 mm stacking height, the connector takes up minimal board space — a critical factor in wearables, smartphones, and compact IoT modules. Available with 20 to 50 contact positions, it also tolerates temperatures from –40 °C to +125 °C, covering everything from consumer tech to industrial applications.

A Connector Aimed at the Future

Kyocera’s 5908 Series is more than a size reduction exercise. It’s a practical solution to the combined challenges of EMI control, mechanical reliability, and high-speed performance. For engineers working in space-limited designs where stability matters, it’s a connector worth noting.
