TDK ICM‑536xx Brings High‑Performance OIS to Mainstream Devices

TDK’s new ICM‑536xx IMU delivers high‑performance optical image stabilization for smartphones, tablets, and cameras in a compact, low‑power MEMS package.

Uploaded image As mobile photography pushes the boundaries of what compact devices can capture, sensor innovation continues to play a central role. TDK’s latest release, the InvenSense SmartMotion® ICM‑536xx family, introduces a high‑performance 6‑axis IMU designed specifically to support optical image stabilization (OIS) across a wider range of smartphones, tablets, and motion cameras.

Designed for the Next Generation of Mobile Imaging

OIS has historically been reserved for flagship devices, where cost, size, and power budgets could accommodate the required sensor technology. TDK aims to change that. The ICM‑536xx delivers high‑precision motion sensing in a compact MEMS package that reduces power draw and physical height, enabling easier integration into space‑constrained designs.

It combines a 3‑axis gyroscope and 3‑axis accelerometer, supporting up to 6.4 kHz output data rate (ODR) and 20‑bit resolution. Both key factors in maintaining clarity during motion, especially in low‑light or zoom conditions. This makes the new IMU suitable not only for premium mobile devices, but also for cost‑sensitive mid‑range platforms where image quality is becoming a competitive feature.

Features That Support Smarter Stabilisation

Engineers working on camera modules will note the dual interface for UI and OIS, offering flexibility in signal handling and response. The device supports I3C, I²C, and SPI interfaces, with 1.2 V logic compatibility, helping meet modern low‑power design requirements.

  • Additional features include:
  • ±32 g/±4000 dps full scale range (FSR)
  • On‑chip free‑fall detection for actuator protection
  • FSYNC input for frame‑to‑sensor synchronisation
  • Thinner package height for more flexible placement

These details make the ICM‑536xx not only a performance upgrade, but also a practical one. Suited for devices where thermal limits, battery life, and mechanical layout are already stretched.

From Flagship-Only to Everywhere

By removing traditional barriers to OIS adoption, the ICM‑536xx could help drive sharper imaging across a wider swath of mobile and embedded platforms. With sensor‑driven image quality becoming a key battleground in consumer electronics, it’s clear that motion-sensing innovation like this plays a growing role in the end-user experience.
