Melexis Launches MLX80124 Code-Free LED Driver for Automotive Lighting

Melexis introduces the MLX80124, a LIN-based RGB LED driver that simplifies automotive lighting with GUI control, built-in diagnostics, and ASIL B safety.

Uploaded image Melexis has launched the MLX80124, a LIN-based RGB LED driver designed to simplify the creation of automotive lighting systems. Rather than relying on embedded firmware, engineers can now configure lighting behaviour entirely through a graphical interface. The approach speeds up design cycles and removes much of the validation work that comes with traditional code-based development.

Automotive interiors are rapidly evolving. Lighting now plays a key role not just in aesthetics, but also in driver comfort and human–machine interaction. As lighting zones multiply across dashboards, doors, and consoles, so too does system complexity. The MLX80124 helps reduce that overhead by replacing firmware with configurable logic that’s both flexible and predictable.

Precision Control Without Firmware

Inside the MLX80124 are four high-voltage output channels, each capable of driving up to 60 mA. That gives engineers enough headroom to power RGB lighting across multiple zones without adding extra driver ICs. Built on BCD (Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS) technology, the device maintains high efficiency while delivering the durability expected for automotive applications.

Rather than developing and validating firmware, engineers can define lighting transitions, brightness curves, and dimming profiles using Melexis’s configuration software. Adjustments can be made in minutes rather than days, and results are consistent across production runs. The device also monitors itself, detecting open or short circuits, power irregularities, and thermal stress, safeguards that improve long-term reliability and reduce testing overhead.

Compact, Reliable, and Backward Compatible

The SOIC-8 package keeps the design compact, making it well-suited to confined spaces such as door trims or overhead consoles. It’s pin-compatible with the existing MLX81123 and MLX81124, which means upgrades can be made without redesigning the PCB. With a wide operating range of –40 °C to +125 °C, AEC-Q100 qualification, and ISO 26262 ASIL B functional safety support, the device meets the full range of automotive reliability requirements.

According to Michael Bender, Product Line Director at Melexis, “The MLX80124 allows our customers to design advanced lighting systems faster and with fewer resources. By removing the need for firmware, we’re helping OEMs focus on creativity rather than code.”

Why It Matters

Automotive lighting has become a defining part of in-vehicle experience, guiding driver attention and reinforcing brand identity. The MLX80124 shows how configurable, code-free electronics can accelerate design without compromising performance. For engineers, it represents a move toward smarter, simpler system design, one where creativity takes priority over complexity.
