ROHM Smart Switches Enhance Zonal Controllers with High-Capacitance Drive
ROHM’s BV1HBxxxEFJ-C smart switches combine low ON resistance, high-capacitance load drive, and precise current sensing for automotive zonal controllers. Primary Product Category: Automotive Power Devices
As vehicles add more electronics, traditional fuse-and-relay systems are reaching their limits. Automakers are moving toward zonal architectures, where each controller manages a cluster of functions like lighting, windows, or safety systems. This reduces wiring complexity but puts heavier demands on the switches that connect loads to the controller.
Conventional smart switches often fall short when asked to handle large capacitive loads. That’s a problem in zonal systems, where dozens of different subsystems may sit on the same controller.
What ROHM Has Developed
ROHM’s new BV1HBxxxEFJ-C series aims squarely at this challenge. The line includes six high-side smart switches with ON resistances ranging from 9 to 180 milliohms. They combine low conduction losses with the ability to drive high-capacitance loads directly, something many existing devices struggle with.
A built-in current sense circuit with ±5% accuracy gives engineers a way to monitor loads closely. Protection features cover overcurrent, overvoltage, and overheating, while diagnostics such as open-load and reverse-battery detection add another layer of safety.
Why It Matters for Zonal Controllers
The shift to zonal controllers is about more than just wiring simplification. It’s also tied to functional safety and the electrification of vehicles. If each controller can reliably protect its loads, automakers can move away from mechanical fuses and relays, simplifying design and improving response to faults.
By offering both high-capacitance drive and strong energy tolerance, ROHM’s switches allow controllers to power a wider range of loads without extra external components. That’s useful for anything from door lock motors to LED lighting systems.
Packaging and Reliability
All six devices come in compact HTSOP-J8 packages with good thermal performance, and they’re rated for –40 °C to +150 °C operation. Gold-standard reliability features and a balance between low ON resistance and inductive energy clamp tolerance give them the resilience required in harsh automotive environments.
A Step Toward Fuse-Free Designs
The direction of travel in automotive design is clear: fewer mechanical parts, more semiconductor-based solutions. ROHM’s new smart switches reflect that trend by giving engineers tools designed around zonal architectures rather than legacy systems.
For system designers, this means higher reliability, fewer compromises, and a more straightforward path to implementing next-generation vehicle electronics.
