Melexis Launches Fourth-Generation LIN Motor Driver for EV Airflow Control

Melexis introduces the MLX81350, a 0.5 A LIN motor driver with sensorless FOC and ASIL B compliance for efficient, quiet EV HVAC and vent control.

Uploaded image As electric vehicles become more sophisticated, the role of small, efficient motors inside the cabin has expanded dramatically. Systems that once relied on a handful of flap motors now use dozens to fine-tune airflow, manage cabin temperature, and optimise energy use from the main battery. To help engineers meet these demands, Melexis has released the MLX81350, a new generation of automotive LIN motor driver designed for quiet and efficient air-conditioning flaps and electronic vents.

Smart Motor Control for HVAC Systems

The MLX81350 is a 0.5 A LIN motor driver that delivers up to 5 W of output power. It combines digital and analogue control on a single chip and is built using high-voltage silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology. The device is fully compliant with LIN 2.x / SAE J2602 and ISO 17987-4, making it suitable for use in standard LIN-based vehicle networks.

At its core, the device features an evolved software architecture that introduces sensorless, closed-loop Field-Oriented Control (FOC). This provides smoother motion, lower current draw, and reduced acoustic noise, important qualities for EV cabins where sound levels are closely monitored. The chip also includes improved stall detection to protect against mechanical blockage and overload conditions.

Integration and Flexibility

Backward compatibility has been preserved, allowing engineers to migrate from earlier Melexis drivers without changing board layouts. The MLX81350 integrates a LIN interface for communication, protection features for over-current, over-voltage, and temperature, and a full suite of peripherals for system design. These include UART, SPI and I²C connectivity, a 13-bit ADC with sub-microsecond conversion time, five motor PWM timers, and additional general-purpose timers and I/Os.

To minimise energy loss, the driver offers multiple wake-up modes and low standby consumption, typically 25 µA, with a maximum of 50 µA. It operates from the vehicle’s 12 V supply across a 5.5 V to 28 V range. Internal voltage regulators and ASIL B design practices further enhance safety and reliability.

Supporting Efficiency in Modern EVs

Controlling airflow accurately inside an electric vehicle helps balance comfort and energy use, particularly when heating or cooling must run from the traction battery. The MLX81350 allows precise, quiet operation of HVAC flaps and electronic vents while keeping the electronics compact and affordable. For automotive designers, this balance of performance and cost is essential as EV architectures continue to evolve.
