Infineon Launches XDP8HD40S-1 Hot-Swap Controller for 800 VDC Power Systems
Infineon launches the XDP8HD40S-1 high-voltage hot-swap controller for ±400 V and 800 VDC power systems with digital SOA control, PMBus monitoring and fast fault shutdown.
Infineon has introduced the XDP8HD40S-1, a high-voltage hot-swap controller for digital power-path protection and monitoring in ±400 V and 800 VDC power architectures.
The device is aimed at high-voltage server and rack-level power systems where modules, converters, GPUs and other subsystems need to be connected or disconnected without compromising the rest of the power path. Infineon is also targeting 1500 V intermediate bus systems, battery backup systems, peak shaving and single- or dual-side hot-swap implementations.
A central part of the design is digital Safe Operating Area control, combined with programmable and preconfigured protection functions. The controller also includes a variable-pulse SOA mode, called Boost Mode, to manage startup while keeping the external power switch within its safe operating region.
Fast Protection for High-Voltage Power Paths
The XDP8HD40S-1 includes an integrated gate driver for external SiC cascode stages based on a MOSFET and JFET combination.
For abnormal operating conditions, the controller supports fast power-switch shutdown with a configurable 1.5 A pull-down current and includes surge-immunity protection. Programmable input and output overvoltage and undervoltage protection are also built in, together with external temperature sensing and overtemperature protection.
Infineon is positioning the device to work alongside its OptiMOS MOSFETs and CoolSiC JFETs in high-voltage protection stages, including 800 VDC architectures where inrush current and transient events become more difficult to manage as system voltage increases.
Monitoring and Fault Recording Built In
The controller also adds system monitoring through a PMBus 1.5 interface and integrated measurement functions.
A built-in black-box recording feature captures event information for fault analysis and debugging, while 12-bit current and voltage ADCs provide approximately 1% voltage accuracy, 1% current accuracy and 3% power accuracy. Analog power monitoring is specified at 1.5% accuracy, and the device also includes integrated energy metering.
The XDP8HD40S-1 operates with a VDDB range of 4.5 V to 24 V and a VDDA range of 4.5 V to 13.2 V. It is supplied in a 10.7 × 10.3 mm LFDSO-40 package.
Samples are targeted for availability in the second quarter of 2027.
