Littelfuse Launches 7000 W Automotive TVS Diode with 24 V Flat Clamping
Littelfuse launches the TP7.0SMD-XC automotive TVS series with 7000 W peak pulse power, 24 V foldback clamping and AEC-Q101 qualification for 12 V protection.
Littelfuse has launched the TP7.0SMD-XC series of automotive TVS diodes, combining up to 7000 W peak pulse power with a low, flat clamping response for sensitive automotive electronics.
The first device in the series, the TP7.0SMD24CA-XC, uses foldback technology to provide a 24 V clamping voltage in a DO-214AB (SMC) package. Littelfuse is targeting 12 V battery systems where low absolute maximum ratings on downstream ICs leave little margin between normal operating voltage and the level at which transient damage can occur.
In those designs, conventional TVS devices may not clamp low enough on their own, forcing engineers to use multiple devices in series. The TP7.0SMD24CA-XC is intended to reduce that need by combining high surge capability and a lower clamp voltage in a single surface-mount device.
Foldback Clamping for Sensitive Automotive Loads
The new diode handles up to 7000 W of peak pulse power on a 10/1000 µs waveform while maintaining a 24 V clamping voltage.
Its foldback characteristic is the key part of the design. Rather than allowing the clamping voltage to continue rising sharply with surge current, the device is designed to hold the voltage at a lower, flatter level. That gives designers more headroom when protecting ICs with relatively low voltage limits.
Littelfuse says the approach can reduce or eliminate series-connected TVS devices in some 12 V protection circuits. It can also make it possible to use lower-voltage-rated MOSFETs while still meeting automotive jump-start requirements.
The device is AEC-Q101 qualified and PPAP capable, with an operating junction temperature range from -65°C to 175°C.
12 V Protection with a Route to 48 V Systems
Littelfuse is targeting zone control units, anti-reverse protection, ADAS electronics, I/O interfaces and VCC bus protection.
For 12 V systems, the TP7.0SMD24CA-XC is designed to meet 12 V and 24 V jump-start requirements as a single device. For 48 V battery systems, Littelfuse says the same foldback approach can be extended by placing the device in series with a conventional TVS diode.
The series also provides IEC 61000-4-2 ESD protection up to 30 kV for both air and contact discharge, along with IEC 61000-4-4 EFT protection on data lines.
The TP7.0SMD24CA-XC is available now in tape-and-reel packaging.
