Murata Digital Output PIR Sensor for Low Power IoT

Murata introduces the IRS-D200ST00R1, a compact digital PIR sensor with low power consumption and simplified I²C integration.

Uploaded image Murata has released the IRS-D200ST00R1, a surface-mount pyroelectric infrared sensor aimed at compact IoT and battery-powered systems. It delivers digital output, low current draw, and a small footprint, making it well-suited for products that need reliable motion detection without frequent battery changes.

Simplifying Motion Sensing

Most pyroelectric infrared sensors on the market still output an analog signal. That usually means extra work for the engineer: an amplifier, an ADC, and filtering all have to be added around the device. Murata has folded those functions into the IRS-D200ST00R1, which connects to the host processor through a standard I²C interface. The result is less external circuitry, fewer parts on the board, and a shorter design cycle.

For applications like wireless cameras or access systems, the benefit is obvious. Fewer support components make it easier to shrink the overall product, while digital integration helps avoid the drift and noise issues that can affect analog designs.

Designed for Low Power

Power efficiency is a major driver for IoT devices, and this sensor was built with that in mind. Typical consumption is just 8 µA, low enough to support long-term battery operation. An interrupt function ensures the microcontroller is only woken when motion is actually detected. In practice, that means systems can stay in sleep mode most of the time, conserving energy until they need to act.

Compact but Capable

The IRS-D200ST00R1 is packaged in a 6.0 × 6.0 × 2.6 mm form factor, giving designers more room to work with in dense layouts. Despite its size, it offers a strong signal-to-noise ratio and EMI resistance, which helps reduce false triggers in real-world environments. Key figures include a dual-element electrode size of 2.0 × 0.5 mm, a typical responsivity of 19.5 mV, and a field of view rated at ±55° horizontal and ±42° vertical. Supply voltage covers the 1.8 to 3.3 V range, and the sensor is fully reflow compatible for streamlined manufacturing.

Availability

The IRS-D200ST00R1 is already in mass production, and Murata has confirmed that samples are available through its regular distribution network. With its combination of compact design, low current consumption, and digital output, the device offers a straightforward motion detection solution for the next generation of smart and connected products.
