STMicroelectronics Launches 5MP BrightSense Image Sensors for Industrial and AI Vision

STMicroelectronics expands its BrightSense portfolio with 5 MP sensors offering dual global and rolling shutter modes, 2.25 µm pixels, RGB-IR separation, and single-frame HDR for industrial and AI vision.

Uploaded image STMicroelectronics has expanded its BrightSense imaging portfolio with four new 5-megapixel CMOS sensors: VD1943, VB1943, VD5943, and VB5943. The new series targets the growing demand for high-performance vision systems across industrial automation, security, and retail environments.

By combining global and rolling shutter operation in a single design, the sensors offer a mix of speed and clarity that would normally require two separate devices. Engineers can select the most suitable capture mode for their application, ensuring motion-artifact-free video when tracking fast objects while maintaining low noise and high detail for still scenes. This level of flexibility makes the range well-suited to factory inspection, robotics, and intelligent monitoring.

Dual-Mode Imaging and Compact Design

Each device supports both shutter types, allowing developers to balance capture speed with image depth as needed. Based on a 2.25 µm pixel architecture and advanced 3D stacking, the sensors reach a 73 percent pixel-array-to-die ratio in a compact 10.3 × 8.9 mm package. The small footprint enables integration into space-limited embedded systems without a loss in performance.

The RGB-IR versions (VD1943 and VB1943) include on-chip RGB-IR separation, removing the need for external filters or optics. Output options include 5 MP RGB-NIR 4×4, 5 MP Bayer, and 1.27 MP NIR subsampling. Independent exposure control and instant switching between output modes add flexibility for systems that require both colour and infrared imaging.

Enhanced Performance and Industrial Flexibility

ST has equipped the sensors with backside illumination (BSI) and capacitive deep trench isolation (CDTI) to improve light sensitivity and image sharpness in dim conditions. Single-frame HDR increases dynamic range and visibility in high-contrast scenes, providing consistent image quality for machine-vision and edge-AI platforms.

Evaluation samples of the BrightSense family are available now, with mass production planned for February 2026. Documentation, evaluation kits, and product samples can be obtained through ST’s authorised distributors and sales representatives.

Why It Matters

By integrating dual shutter modes, HDR capability, and compact construction, STMicroelectronics is giving engineers a single sensor platform that covers both precision imaging and high-speed capture. The design supports applications ranging from robotic inspection to biometric identification and automated checkout, highlighting how modern imaging continues to evolve for connected industrial systems.
